Default Malfunction light

Hey guys. I've been lurking here for quite a while now since I got my S2000 earlier this year. This sub forum has been a great help with all my audio questions and all I did was use the search button.

Now on to my question:

My Maintenance Required light came on a bit over a week ago. From my quick search, apparently it doesn't mean anything significant. Just telling me, by my mileage, that I should be getting some service done. Right? I had an oil change less than 1500 miles ago if that means anything.

Yesterday evening my Malfunction light came on. I went to my local dealership this morning and they informed me it would be multiple hours of sitting around before they can plug in a computer and tell me what the light means. Unfortunately, I don't have time or a spare vehicle/ride for this.

Like many other cars, is there a way I can pull the codes myself without a reader? How would I go about this and where would I find these codes?

Thanks for any help guys.

i dont believe u can pull a code without an obd II computer... you would need something to pull the codes from the computer... easiest way... goto honda... ask them to pull the code... look it up on S2ki... and take it from there... if your looking for a cheap way out... and if a shop tells you it takes hours to pull a code there jerkin your chain... should only take about 10 minutes...

Is it the check engine light? or is it the Maint Req light?

If it is the CEL - you have a code. get to someone to pull the code.

If it is the Maint Req Light - check the owners manual on how to reset since they did not reset it when you got your oil changed last time you were in for the change. This happened to me last oil change.

if its the maint req light... press the two buttons to the right of you cluster... and turn the ignition on... keep holding the two buttons down until the light turns off... easy as that..

Any Autozone or Advance Auto Parts (or the like) should be able to pull your CEL codes free of charge.

The guys at the Advance down the street know me well...

Just a side note...if it is flashing, don't drive the car except straight to the dealership.

On = something just needs to be fixed or replaced
Flashing = something really bad has happened

Go to your local auto parts store and get the code. Make sure you write them down if it is more than one. Look them up here.

So I go to autozone. Dude at the counter informs me it is now illegal to rent/borrow OBDII readers. You can buy the readers, but you can not rent them. If this is true, I'll keep my thoughts on that to myself....

So I go to dealership hoping they are slow and more helpful. Not. Dude informs me very politely it will be a couple hours and $150 to 'run diagnostics.' I ask him why can't they just pull the code for me and I explain that I have an extended warranty on my Certified used Honda. He just says "we don't do that." F them.

On a plus note, I feel like an ass for posting since it went off about a 1/4 mile from the dealership.

^^That is a bunch of crap. I have gone to Shucks numerous times and they even just let me take it out myself and pull the code.

Go to some other auto parts place like that.
