Default Mono Amps for Subs

OK, I am a little confused.

1 channel subwoofer for subs on the Internet have L & R ins and out.......hello.......this is supposed to be single channel..... L & R would be a two channel amp.

How does this get connected for a single sub?? Can you just use the L or R? No power issues doing that, since one side is not seeing a load??

Thanks! Mike

If you use both left and right inputs, the amplifier will add them together and create a single mono signal which it will then amplify. Exactly how summing works in electrical terms I couldn't tell you but I'm sure PJK3 or another EJ could.

The left and right outputs allow you to pass a copy of the input signal to a downstream component (another amp, a crossover, anything that takes a stereo input).

If you use only one of the inputs, the amp will only see one side of the stereo image. There could be electrical issues as well. Again here, an EJ can respond more completely.

Hope that helps.

I *think* those amps are designed to be bridged. Connect positive lead of one to the positive lead on the speaker. Connect the negative lead of the OTHER channel to the negative lead on the speaker. This should combine the two channels into a single mono channel.

I THINK this is how to do it....Phil, John, or Dave could answer a bit more definitively. Phil should chime in here in a bit with his daily rounds...he really knows his stuff.

Check out the Crutchfield Advisor online. They have wiring diagrams for all sorts of stuff. There is probably one on this topic.

The output is what makes the amp a 1 channel, 2 channel, etc.

The input is for the signal only.

Can be kind of confusing on mono sub amps that have a 2 channel looking output.
(L+, L- R+, R-) or just (+,+ -, -)

This is only so you dont have to shove two or more wire ends into the same terminal. Its purely for aesthetics.

MTX is one company that does this, for example.

But always go by the output when determining how many channels the amp has.

The MEMPHIS 16-MC250D MONOBLOCK has two ins and two outs yet is said to be mono. Hmm..I'm not sure how to come in from a single "sub out" of the HU and then feed one sub.....

Sorry. I was assuming you were going to feed it left and/or right inputs.

Good question. You might be able to plug the mono out from the upstream unit into either (left or right) of the inputs. In any case, let''s wait to hear what an EJ has to say...

It should not really matter which one you plug into. The amp would combine them both into a single signal anyways, if you were to run a left and right input (as it is a mono amp). I think that if you were to run a left and a right channel it would matter, but once the amp is wired for mono, it should not matter, as there will be no more "left" or "right" input....i think.

correct.

i'm not sure that the electrical details on combining the signal are really key here , but a set of stereo RCA inputs will be combined to a mono signal by a simple voltage addition, iirc.

now, if you have a single RCA out on your HU and 2 RCA inputs on your amp? i would suggest you use a Y-splitter (appropriately female/male as needed) to split that single sub out signal into 2 channels and run those into the amp. it will be recombined inside, but doing this will make sure that the signal is handled properly. it could be entirely unneccessary, but it may be needed for some amp designs. some amps that i've seen (but had little hands on with) cannot just take a single input into either of the stereo inputs.
if the amp is labeled L(mono)+R, then you can instead just run a single RCA into the left channel. this isn't a typical configuration that you'll see, however it does exist.

otherwise, a simple single RCA to the amp, then a Y-splitter is all you need.

btw -- where are all these "Top Always Down*" logo/images coming from? a couple of them i like quite a bit...
