Default Most amp output ratings are meaningless

I am looking for an amplifier to power a subwoofer. Most of the amps I look at advertise at 14.4 volts, which gives them a higher power rating.

I was ready to buy an Alpine MRD-301 (300 Watts RMS) only to find out that it would be closer to 250 Watts for my car's system. I I know it's not that different, but it seems like I'd have to fork out over $400 for a decent amp that puts out 300 watts RMS at 12 volts.

What I ask is:
With a WLaurent box (10" Speaker), can someone offer some good amp suggestions?
I'd also like to know what is involved in changing my car's system to provide 14.4 V instead of 12 V. Just for knowledge, because it'd cost more than just getting a better amp I'm sure. I remember reading years back that auto manufacturers would soon adopt this as the standard (I don't know what happened to that).

Thanks for the help,
Barrett.

Wow! I feel like an idiot!

I'm going to leave the original post for informational reasons

So I will buy the amp. I'll just make sure to get a dual voice coil speaker then.

Yep, thanks. The amp is rated at 300 W under of 2 ohm load. Power output is less with 4 ohms.

Ah! It's a mono amp! Just wanted to make sure it wasn't one that can do 2-ohms in stereo only.

I like the Infinity Reference series amps. I have the 7520a, and it puts out 283WRMS (but at 4-ohms). There is a mono amp in this series, that puts out close to 300 I think. They are rather large, but have good sound.

Thanks for the info. I bought an Infinity amp years ago, when they weren't making many amps. It was a digital amp and it gave me more trouble than I was willing to deal with. Just wrote off the spent money as bad luck. Glad they have a better product now.
