Default Mounting radar detector

After my 1st speeding ticket, I think it's a good idea at this point to invest in a V1 or a Passport. I am trying to imagine how I will run the wiring though. Would I connect it to the 12V outlet or maybe I can connect it to a relay of some sort? If so how would/did you do it? Thx

You can do a much cleaner install if you don't run it to the 12v port.

I used the link here

Also, I purchased a custom harness...you can buy it here

Note, the one in the link above is a harness for the valentine one...you'll need to purchase the appropriate one for you radar.

Heres my 2 cents. Don't expect to just purchase a $40 Cobra and think you're good. There are many factors to consider when using/purchasing a radar. You can read more here:
http://www.radardetector.net/forums/

Also, a radar is essentially useless on most highways. Cops use lasers 90% of the time on a highway...even with a radar you're still a sitting duck. always remember, its NOT a cop detector.

Personally I wired mine to my stereo harness because it was easier than trying to mess with anything else. One wire clips onto the appropriate switched +12v wire (can't remember which color, but Google told me), and the ground simply slipped around one of the stereo chassis's mounting screws. The direct-wire cable had a fuse built-in. I routed the wire up through the windshield panels (side panel comes off first, by hand). Once I decided how to wire it, it only took a few minutes. I wasted a lot of time trying to reach the "proper" wiring locations described in the S2000.org guide before giving up.

You couldn't possibly be more wrong. The highway is where the radar detector is most useful, as there are a lot of false alarms around town. 90% of highway patrol in your area may use radar, but in general radar is much more widely used.(Plus laser can only be used by a stationary cruiser) I live in Texas, and have never detected laser here. Most of the cops here do us the favor of driving around with their radars on all of the time, so its fairly reliable. It has saved me from at least three tickets around town, and who knows how many on the highway. It goes off, I slow down, the guy behind me gets irritated and accelerates around me just in time to get busted by the cop. It's quite rewarding to watch.

Don't try and go cheap. When you buy radar detectors you get what you pay for and there are only maybe a half dozen worth owning. I personally recommend V1. The arrows are priceless.

How am I wrong? Come to GA/FL I will show you where all the traps are with laser. And if anything...cops aren't idiots that drive around with their radar on. The cops here use POP....

You're wrong in that it depends on location. You said:

However, you're right in that it's appropriate for your particular location.

In over 8,000 miles of highway driving across various parts of the country I'd say that my own experiences don't jive with your claimed 90% figure.

If you're going to look into countermeasures then research what's used in the places you're driving. If laser is a concern then definitely get a good jammer.

+1 for this guide. I had no problems hardwiring my V1. The grounding bolt is a bit tricky to get to but that was the worst of it.

I recommend doing research before buying. I found radardetector.net (mentioned above) one very useful resource. Like most things, RD's aren't one-size-fits-all. I prefer the V2 myself but I can see why many prefer something like the 9500ix. If you can, use the company's trial period to test out the RD and try out several.
