Does that mean if I have 1GB sdram, I can download everything onto it and use it with the system?

you should be able to download from you pc onto the card. either from a cd/dvd or from the manufacturers intetrnet site. preference the internet. update your map data base every couple of years. if you plan a long trip outside your normal area you will have to download those states. my gps has problems joining up between state boundries. there is more than just streets in a good gps data base. it has gas statiolns restraurants etc.
do not get a gps with a hard drive
there are a few card formats: sony has their very own, i like a cf card format, sd format is inexpensive and the micro cards fit cell phones. you can fit the micro in a adapter to simulate the larger cards. get a usb reader/writer adapter for your pc (if the pc dosnt already have a slot) both the adapter and cards are not very expensive compared to performance. 1gig is typical 2gig is nice, 100meg is dirt, verify the card will work in the target device.
stick with a card that fits your cell, camera, mp3, pda along with the gps but whatever.
with the above usb adapter thingy you can transfur files on the card and not disturb the gps files
-get a hand held gps, avoid a pda based system as they are a big hassle, i have one. the nice thing with a pda is i have a mp3 player that i use at the same time the voice prompts on the gps are running. avoid a in the dash system, they are gay.
-voice pormpts are a must: the voice prompts should be able to say "turn right on main street 1 mile ahdead". it should count down prompting: turn right on main street 44 feet ahdead". it should also say "main street will be next on your right" if it is the only right hand turn. after you turn it should prompt for success. i use earphones. never look at screen, dont know why they even put displays on a gps.
-if the gps has not been run in a while it will take some time to fugure things out. the next time it will be much faster to aquire statalite thingys
