You can use the IR dci for both the 9856 and the 9857, as both have IR recievers. However, you can only use the wired dci for the 9857, as it has a plug in the rear for a wired remote and the 9856 does not.
Oh yeah i forgot about the wired connection. Is the wired connection more precise?

Makes absolutely no difference. Only difference is, the IR transmitter is not visible with the wired dci. The speed of the IR is instant, as far as I can tell. I have an IR dci with the 9856.

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

Is the modifry dci the only option for retaining dash controls? My local stereo installer said he has a harness to accomplish that but i'm not sure if it's the modifry.

Your installer is probably talking about a PAC SWI (steering wheel interface). Modifry's DCI has more functions and is more cutom designed for S2000.

It's worth the money.
I just installed a 9857 with the Modifry DCI. I am extremely satisfied with both the head unit and the DCI.

I had the PAC SWI with my Alpine 9857 and HATED it! It is soooo sloooow!

The Modifry is not that much more expensive than the PAC and works much better.

It depends on the HU. So can use a wired version of the DCI some have to use the IR version.
