Thumbs up New Deck

I have 2 new decks, and I don't know which one to install. One's a Clarion, the others a Kenwood. Do I really need to buy a DCI to get the controls beside the steering wheel to work? Is there any other way to put in an aftermarket deck and still have those controls working? Thanks

You need a DCI. http://www.modifry.com has the options for you. There are generic alternatives but people have had trouble with em.

Nope. That's why they're called Dash Control Interfaces... You have to somehow interface the head unit with the dash controls.

There are other DCI choices but I'm getting Modifry's for its extra features (e.g. speed sensitive volume).

How hard is it to install a deck and a DCI?

I was unaware modify's DCI had speed sensitive volume? Damn that just made my day. Is it hard to set the baseline volume?

You don't set the baseline volume, per se. It adjusts volume up (and down) at specific speeds, by one 'click'. His unit allows you to have 2 different profiles in it. One for top up, one for top down for ex.

It works from whatever volume you have your radio set at when not moving.
You can also manually adjust your volume at any time with your volume controls and the DCI, will continue to adjust from this new setpoint.

I like this feature alot. His unit will also allow you to skip back if you want to repeat a song, for example.

I've had a DCI installed since I put in my Pioneer, and I've never used it. I guess it's easier for me to just touch the radio.

If you buy a Pioneer (or Sony?, I believe) I'll give you a good deal on it.

The install is not too bad, but if your headunit is a 2008 model it may require you to run a wire direct to the battery. In addition, Clarion's Orange/White wire gets connected to the Orange wire on the car/adapter harness. I had no trouble with the DCI. I had trouble running the wire to the battery etc. as there's not much room to work in our cars. I eventually got it.

Whatever you do, set aside a good chunk of time. Mine took me probably like 4-5 hours. I took it slow so I didn't damage anything. I also replaced the battery and had to extend a few more wires during that time.

I ordered the harness with the DCI prewired from Modifry and it took me 15 mins to install my new Alpine. I love the dash controls.
