New Design for Rear Speakers
 

I finally found the time to design a different way to have the rear speakers in our S2000. I'm not sure if it has already been posted, but if anyone is interested, I can post a few pictures of the design with my digital camera. I was able to create a grill out of the existing panel that eveyone else has been drilling a hole to place the speakers. At first I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to hear the speakers because there wasn't enough openings in the grills. In fact, they came out great......AND your seat won't rub up against the speaker grill when you put the seat all the way back.

You got it. I think everyone will really like the design. The only reason I attempted this was out of concern of the leather seats rubbing against the speaker grills and creating a "wear-spot" on the back of the seats.

I'd be interested too. I worked 3 ways of alternatives with the grills.

1. Drilled holes
2. Fabric mesh
3. Speaker metal mesh

All would have to be custom for EACH speaker model.

The speaker would be mounted behind the panel. The problems that arose were that were on the 4" size, some speakers have tweeters that protruded beyond the flat of the grill/mesh etc. So not all 4" would work. Besides 4" size sit so low that they don't rub. 5.25" certain models like the Polk GXR5 would rub with the stock grills.

The 5.25" was even more challenging. Since the basket along with the magnet is an issue, the speakers that would fit was limited to lower end quality that would conform to a rear mount placement. Also the actual speaker's rim needed to be trimmed back to get around the coat hook which voids the warranty on the speaker - not good either.

In the end the labor/material involved would have rose the cost at least $100 per set for lower quality speakers, or ones which have voided warranties. :eek:

For best sound anyway with people with the seat all the way back (like me) and to avoid any rubbing is to adjust the seat bottom all the way back and one click forward and place the seat back all the way back touching the backwall. If this is not an option simply pop off the metal grill -
no one would see it anyway.

Would you mind posting (or even by private email if you feel it gives away company secrets) the location of the circle you cut out for the rear panels? The location of the centerpoint is good enough for me...maybe X mm from the bottom of the panel, Y mm from the left, etc.
