Allright, where are all the install pics? I got one too but haven't installed it yet. I'm starting to run out of places to put stuff after my XM install.

Where are you guys putting yours?

A guy from the Omnifi User Group has figured out how to use an external USB drive on the DMP1 in your car, and how to similarly use a USB thumb drive.

READ HERE

Basically after a little formatting described at the site above, when you plug a USB storage device into the USB port on the back of the DMP1, Omnifi will use the plugged-in drive as its music source. For an external HD you would want to use an enclosure that is powered by the USB hub itself so you don't need to deal with running extra power.

I have yet to use the wireless sync option with my mobile Omnifi because it is already filled with music. What this new feature might allow is for me to have one semi-permanent music library on the hard drive, then add new music or temporary music/books/news on a thumb drive.

Jocko, I wired the power as shown in Modifry's photo from his website. It just so happens that the EXACT three connections called for in the Omnifi installation manual are provided by Honda and Modifry, lights, constant, ignition:

I just put three spade terminals on the Omnifi power module leads and plugged them into the appropriate terminals in the photo. I crimped a U-shaped terminal onto the GROUND wire and slipped it into the nest of grounds near the fuse panel. My power module is then tucked up over the top of the kickpanel in the fusebox area.

The one downside to this is that I wish "Ignition" power on also included "accessory" power on. I will be looking for an alternate power source that is on whenever my stereo is on, including when the key is at the accessory position. (Anybody know of such a terminal????)

My disk enclosure sits under the passenger seat. I may ultimately put some velcro on the bottom but for now it seems fine. The controller/faceplate is still mounted in my Alpine faceplate case with the wire extending to the same area under the passenger seat.

When I am driving by myself, I stash the case between the gearshift and the closed radio door. When I have a passenger, I let her control the music so I can focus on scaring her with my driving...

When I park I just close the Alpine case and place it under the passenger seat, completely out of sight.

This Alpine case thing is still temporary to me until I decide where to permanently mount the controller (probably in/on the radio door cover).

So, as far as running wires there are two things to run, the Enclosure wire and the Controller wire. As I said, I am running these form the passenger seat to the fusebox area:

(Start by removing the stereo door and two teardrop panels on either side of the stereo area)

First, I wired in the power module as described above.

Second, I ran the Enclosure wire and the Controller wire together from under the passenger seat,

-under my Rick's leather console cover (under the vertical flap on the passenger side of the tunnel)
-into the teardrop cover to the right of the radio
-under the radio, across the center tunnel to the left teardrop cover
-out the back of the left teardrop cover
-under the dash/steering column area
(NOTE: I had to go over/behind my subwoofer here, but I don't think that applies to anybody else.)
-to the wired-in power module near the fusebox

I pulled the wires tight from the fuse area and left all the excess wire under the passenger seat. I figured this would give me more flexibility in mounting.

The Controller is left with the maximum amount of wire so either the passenger or driver can hold it.

If I was to permanently mount the Controller, say in the radio door cover, I would bundle all the excess wire and stash it either under the driver's side dash or behind the driver's kickpanel.

Finally, the stereo RCA patch cable runs from the power module to my Alpine HU AUX input RCA's, again under the dash near the steering column.

www.woot.com now has the Omnifi DMP1 20GB Car Streamer with WiFi for $145 shipped. Pretty good deal. I just ordered a second one for my other car.

This deal will last until midnight Thursday or until it sells out, whatever is first.

L,

I'd really appreciate a PM the next time you see the original deal happen again... I'd love to get something that works for both home and car.

You bet, I'll do my best. The $200 package for both home and car was a great price for a complete package. I have ended up buying a second "set" by ordering the home version off eBay, and now ordering another car version last night. If you are truly or mildly interested in picking up a package you might want to passively watch eBay. (Just pay attention to shipping reamage.) There are car, home, and car + home packages up for sale.

These things aren't the end-all and be-all for the amount of posts I make about them, but I think they are really cool pieces of technology.

By the way, you are just the kind of guy we need to have messing around with the insides of these things...! There are some hi-res photos of the guts of these boxes at the Yahoo User Group if you feel the need to get pre-interested...

I'm going to attempt to buy one today, if I can get a few questions answered... newsgroups seems to be down at the moment, and I'm leaving here by 6:00 for a day trip to Atlanta...
