Default Opinions on 8" subs

I've been out of the stereo industry for awhile and don't know whats good now. I am going to put an 8" sub in the cabin pretty soon, but i don't know which one I should get. I will be using an Alpine MRD-M301 amp to run the sub.

It has to be at least 200W and have dual voice coils. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Anything better than the JL 8W0v2 subs? Possibly the audiobahn 8" subs?

Where are you mounting the sub? What kind of box? What is your musical taste for bass (sound quality, volume, etc)? Price range?

Then you have never heard a good 8" sub. My two 8"s in my S2000 get pretty close to my old JL 12" subs in my last car.

I had one JL Audio 8W3 D4 running off a Soundstream Contimuum at 350W and it was great. I eventually bought a 10W6 D4, but the 8 was great. Another good 8 is the Boston Pro 8.5 if you can find one. Both subs require a .3 cube sealed box.

8" is not a sub, it is a mid bass woofer.

Why are you posting something as a fact if you do not understand what is being discussed?

8" subwoofers can get mighty low. Mine go below 33.38hz, I'd guess around 22-25hz in WLaurent MDF enclosures. The defintion of midbass is 100 - 400hz. The definition of a subwoofer is "a loudspeaker designed to reproduce bass frequencies." Since "bass" is below 100hz, 8" subwoofers definitely produce bass.

Edit: and on an empirical note just know that two 8" subs with 350 watts each can rattle the sheetmetal of the trunk and be heard half a block away in an S2000. My subs give me a nice massage if I don't use the volume knob judiciously.

Lubedkoala, I'm still waiting to hear what your preferences are in terms of the end results. The results and products will vary considerably depending on how you want the system to sound.

8" is not big enough to be a sub. Subs are built to move air and make "SPL" sound pressure level. 8" is "best used" should I say as a Mid Bass Woofer. If you are going for sound quality run your 8 inch "subs" full range and get a real "sub" like a 12" or 15" for your low frequencies.

It is funny that you compare your JL 12's to your new 8's

Everything is relevant. Car, Power, Box.

Thanks for your input Rat but you really have no idea what your talking about.... plenty of folks here use 8" subs. I'm sorry to tell you this but your just wrong. Please post facts only when talking about something like this.

Thanks
