Default Otterbox belt clip modified for iphone mounting

Just thought i would post this if anyone else was interested. I use my iphone with an otterbox and it is impossible to find a mount that will accept the otterbox for under 50 bucks. Since i never use my belt clip i figured i would try to modify it and mount it to my modifry bracket for use like i had my last 3g mount that worked without a case.

-First thing to do it to pull out the metal spring inside the belt clip with some long needlenose pliers.
-Once that spring clip is out the belt clip will slide over and be removable. I then took this part and drilled 2 small holes in it that aligned with the bracket hole that existed.
-Then with the needlenose remove the plastic clip that attaches the part that actually grabs the phone to the belt clip but pressing the tabs in.
-Bolt up the belt clip to the bracket and re-assemble the otterbox mount
-I also used a zip tie on the bottom to keep the belt clip from opening as if you would put it onto your belt

Works great and tilts

I found a RAM mount that really rocks. It mounts the iPhone with or without case - and a number of other phones for that matter. Phone does not budge and is held in place by soft rubber. Here is a photo from the RAM website. Only problem is you need to get the right hardware to attach it. So it does add up - i.e. more than $50.

The RAM mount is the cat's meow... It is spring loaded and can be used on any number of phones. Holds the iPhone really tight despite any fast cornering you might like to do. RAM has a video on their website where they run the mount through it's paces with a vibration machine. I can say that RAM quality is top notch.

For an Otterbox Defender case the mount does not come across as bulky in the flesh. Without RAM's one inch mounting ball, you could bolt the thing directly onto Modifry's or Panavise's bracket. I went with the Panavise bracket in my car because I wanted to keep any USB cable on the passenger's side. Also went with the RAM arm extension to position the iPhone exactly where I wanted it. For $23 you can buy the part off Amazon and just remove the one inch ball and use the bolt to attach directly to your bracket: http://www.amazon.co...s=RAM-HOL-UN7BU

Or you can get the part without the pre-mounted one inch ball and track down the right bolt for hooking it up. Part number is RAM-HOL-UN7U. Here are some photos of the finished product. One with Otterbox case, the other with a much slimmer (sparkly) case on my wife's phone. The photo without phone shows the (somewhat bulky) hardware off but I never drive around without the phone in place. Passenger gets a somewhat different view but not a huge deal for me. I drive with my car all the time with the phone mounted and so all I see is the four rubber "tabs" on the RAM mount.
