Passenger Parking Light - Very Strange Behavior
Electronics Junkies, Please help me diagnose this odd issue!
Problem:
My passenger side running light is most of the time not working. The drivers' side is lit, but not the passenger. Both blinkers work normally. Occasionally, the passenger side running light will work! I can't reproduce either the failure or the working condition.
I bought this car used, so who knows what life the front of the car has actually seen.
A little bit of history:
I brought the car back to the dealer where I bought it, the same day I bought it. (When I observed the light not working, and was of course not happy) When I arrived at the service area, the light was working! I thought I was losing my mind.
A couple of weeks later the light went off again and stayed off. I brought it in and had the dealer look at it. They said it was just a burnt out bulb, and they replaced it.
Now, just a few days after that - it's not working again! arg!!
UPDATE 1: I ran a battery (ha) of tests on both sides. The voltage going to each parking light socket (Honda calls them front side marker lights) is 11.77V with the engine off. There is no resistance across the terminals (good). I even disassembled the plug on the passenger side to check for issues. The only thing odd is that the actual bulb socket (not the wiring harness) has some orange burn marks where apparently one or several bulbs have gotten too hot and burned up. Sure enough, the bulb I pulled was burnt out. I tried replacing it with a cheapo Pep Boys 12V LED bulb (194) that has been working fine in my trunk. It burned the LED, too! Instantly. No light, just a pop and then a dead bulb.
Why would this socket burn bulbs like this? I wiggled the plug and wiring harness but it showed a steady 11.77V the whole time.
