Default Pioneer "shallow sub woofers"

i was looking around and trying to find what subs i want to put in my s2k. i came across these:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/prod...0400838,00.html

they look like they might be able to fit in the spare tire area or at least would take up almost no space in the trunk if mounted correctly. i was thinking on getting two of them and mounting the in the trunk, most likley where the spare tire goes.

anyone with experience with these or opinions feel free to chime in.

Thanks.

The most limiting factor is the size of the enclosure, not the depth of the sub. Also, you you mean for it to play through a hole in the package tray, a 12" will be hard to fit. The max I believe would be a 10" unless you get a bit creative. I installed an 8" solobaric L7 in my spare tire space and it took a lot of fitting and cutting to make something that would work. I haven't taken any pix yet because I still have to pull it out and trim it one last time. I still have about a 1/4" too much depth to the box on the one corner then I'll be able to get all the snaps back in the panel.

Exactly as hukares said. The most limiting factor with the Pioneer TS-SW124D and other shallow mount subs is the size of the enclosure. If you put one in a box that's small enough for the spare tire area, it will probably have a "boomy" sound that you might or might not like.

hukares, it sounds like you did something pretty creative with the 8" Solobaric. It would be great to see pics. Maybe even a separate "subs in the spare tire area" thread. I think other people might have done something and it's what I'm trying to do.

Well in a space-challenged environment like the S2K, mounting depth is an important parameter. I think it gives more options. The recommended chamber volume is 0.6 to 1.0 cu. ft. That's not too bad...

For comparison their other 12" inchers require about 1.5 cu ft.

They actually sell a box to go along with it, and it's dimensions are: 30-5/8" x 14-3/8" x 6-3/8" It won't fit easily in an S2000...

But I think most 12" are a bit of a challenge in the S2000--you've got to give up some trunk space.

I like the idea of going shallow though. If they did come out with a shallow 10" or an 8", that might be interesting for the S2K...

What about the Illusion Audio Nd-10? Does anyone have any info on this sub? Has anyone heard one?

I have the Pioneer 12" sub that you mention above.

It is installed into a sealed custom box that I built with "Tukluc" on the board.......It is installed in the spare tire well as you can see from the pics below.

The sub is downward firing.......making use of the space where the spare tire bolts down for speaker travel.

The enclosure volume measures out close to .76 cubic feet..........Sounds great & it's hidden from view

Pioneer recommends 0.6 - 1.0 cubic feet

We saved the template......this is our 3rd box that we have built...........In the first 2 we used MTX 10"..........the 12" Pioneer hits harder & sounds better / deeper than the 10's

It's powered by a JL Audio 250/1

I'll see if I can find a few more pics of the box by itself / not installed

Illusion Audio subs have a great reputation. Unfortunately they went out of business a few years ago and their ND subs are almost impossible to find now. I've never heard one but I've always heard good things about them.

Nice work, Batbite, and thanks for the pics! If you have a template, other people might be interested in trying this option.

Shall we make this the unofficial "sub in the spare tire area" thread?
