You could just leave the radio where it is and use a thin/slimline gauge and mount them into the radio door. Something like this:

Actually, mounting your HU under the seat is an often used option in the hot rod & custom world. My brother has had one in his roadster for about 10 years. Sometimes under the seat is the best option. this company sells one:

Dude....its much easier to put the gauges somewhere else than a radio. I think its a stupid idea personally. No offence, but cmon.....

^ Maybe it's not about "easier". I'll bet very few of us do it the easiest way when we're customizing our cars.

Under seat would work fine, or maybe vertically behind the seat if you don't need to push it all the way back. I don't think there's enough room to put it in the panel behind the seat. If you consider the vertical mount, there might be enough room to stick it vertically behind the passenger dash, but that would make loading disks a little tricky. You might want to experiment with operating the HU vertically or on it's side before trying that type of mounting option. I think it would look funny under the passenger dash or sticking out the dash access panel.

You're right, you'll never be able to hear it if it's under the seat. That's almost as dumb as putting the radio behind a closed panel.

I have seen people (sorry, can't find pics right now) that have mounted the guages in the empty dash area above the radio.

I have also seen people relocate (Or just mount) a HU in the same area. I think the guages look better, and it makes them easier to see then having them down so low.

A slick mounting location might be vertically inside the glove box, or in the center console, where some people have mounted CD Changers.

What about a stealth radio in the secret compartment?

I have used a couple of these units one for a 66 GTO and personally in a 57 Chevy. They function well and the units I purchased were made by Pioneer.
