Default Power Acoustik Rear Camera Install

I completed my install of a rear camera to the Power Acoustik CP-71 head unit and thought I’d share what I did and the best video I found to help me through the install.

Since I always try my best to never cut factory wiring and try to avoid tapping into it as well, I built a wiring harness that allowed me to connect the backup camera to the reverse light in my AP2. The cost and time to do this exceeds simply tapping into the wire, but my result met my preferences of not disturbing the original wiring in any manner and also allows for me to easily swap out the camera should my camera fail in the future or if I wish to use a different model.

I built a small harness using a male and female two-pin Sumitomo HD 090 series connectors that I purchased from Cycle Terminal. The harness has a male HD 090 on one side, a female HD 090 on the other, and a two pigtail wires each with a standard female blade terminal connector. One side of the harness plugs into the rear taillight, the other to the original factor harness. You would terminate the positive and negative leads of whatever camera you purchase with standard male blade terminal connectors and plug them into the pigtails of the harness. Green wire of the factory harness is positive, black is negative.

I am including a picture of a harness that is not covered in wire loom that is wired in the exact same way as the one that's shown covered in wire loom within my trunk area. It's a simple harness to make. Please be aware that the best way to crimp wires to the open barrel terminal pins used by the Sumitomo connectors requires using a suitable crimping tool.

I don’t know this guy, but I found his video on installing a rear camera and routing the wire into the cabin to be super helpful. Kudos to him for producing a great how-to. Once the wire from the camera is routed into the cabin, he elects to complete his run by going through the driver door sill since he was not connecting his rear camera to a head unit. I elected to run mine up the side of the center console tunnel (inbetween the carpet and the interior trim) because I wanted to avoid routing a wire under the steering wheel area. Once you’re in the cabin, you can decide what’s the best routing option for your install and preference.

I always recommend using wiring loom/wrap for any loose wires. You decide what’s best for you. There will typically be a lot of excess wire for the run that goes from your taillight to the head unit. I bundled mine up with zip ties and left it in the space in-between the trunk and cabin. I secured it so it would not move.

Hi, awesome write up!

I am planning to create the harness that you made using the Sumitomo connectors because I do not want to t-tap into the OEM wires.
I'm wondering what kind of electrical wires I need? I know there are different gauge types, but I have no idea about electrical stuff.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I’m glad you found the post helpful!

I used 18 guage fully tinned copper wire. I don’t recommend using cooper clad wire.

Hey... i'm trying to wire a backup camera to my CP-71W also...
are you using the modifry harness?
I noticed mine didn't have a pin and wire connected to the "rear camera" (#3 pink wire)... i'm assuming it's a trigger wire. My modifry harness just had a blank spot.
And yes i did plug in the yellow RCA cable to the back of the head unit...
How did you get yours to work?

I removed a wired pin from another Kenwood style head unit connector and inserted it into the Modifry connector. I will say it was a royal PIA to do since I had no prior experience depinning a connector.

I would hope that the new guy over at Modifry would start including this wire in the harness. But for now, you need to use your own wired pin.

I did that also... pulled a pin from another connector and installed it into the modifry one but i can't get it to work... not sure what's happening...

I did the exact same thing since I didn't want to cut and splice my factory wires back there.
Does the reverse light provide enough power for the camera? I don't recall it outputting 12 volts.

Reverse circuit provides plenty of power. If you are concerned you can install LED lights which use 1/2 watt.

An alternative to the crimpers above is the Hozan P-707 or P-706. The smooth finish on the dies will make achieving a quality crimp significantly easier. It drop ships from Japan if you must purchase on Amazon.

Cycle terminal has a good write up on crimping, so read that over when purchasing pins and plug/receptacles. Consider their crimpers as well.

Yup, I saw the pictures above and figured it was enough power. Re-did the connection today and added the red power wire to the mix.
