problem with speakers
Hey guys,
Just need abit of help here, im not too sure what the problem is though.
I currently have a JL e2150 or a2150 (somthing like that) series amp running some VR's im my car.
The problem is that the speakers randomly cut out but the sub still works.
Im not 100% sure about if its everytime i hit a bump, but its happened when ive been on a smooth road.
Any ideas on what it could be? is my amp dying? the wires which go into the amp look fine, they dont look like they are loose or anything.
thanks!

Sounds like a grounding problem that is just effecting your front speakers and not the sub. So your amp may be fine. I would resecure the ground for that amp. Try that first. However if that doesn't stop the issue. You might have a speaker wire in the car that has rubbed through the outer shielding and is now grounding to the body of the car there-by shorting out that amp and sending it into protection mode. This will reset if the wire that is grounding backs away from the metal of the car, like say when you hit a bump... but will re ground itself when you hit the next bump in the road.
Check all the connections to the amp, both the power and grounds first. Replace any inline fuses that route to that amp as well, just to be safe.

Is it tied to volume (louder it is, the more likely it is to cutout?)? Or does it cutout "randomly" (like over certain turns / bumps)?
Volume related = turn amp gain down. You are clipping the amp, sending it into protect mode.
Randomly = connection issue (whether a loose ground, or a speaker wire grounding out). Electical physics are not "random"... they appear random, until you find the cause.
To tell if its a grounding issue, get it to cutout in the garage. Then see if the power light is on. If its not, the ground/power/remote connection has been lost. If it is, the amp is in protect mode for some reason (whether it be clipping due to gain setting or grounded signal wire).

could be an amp also, swap the inputs and outputs around
I have JBL GTO 75.4
My right channel was cutting in and out at moderate volume. I played musical chairs with the input channels and the output and it turned out 1 channel of the amp was failing (FR)
I replaced it with a refurb JBL GTO 75.4... that worked for a short while then one of its channel failed, too (FL)
lesson learned = stay away from JBL
