Default Question for Lucid, RE: Speakers

I PMed you on this but being somewhat new to PMs am not sure if it actually got to you.....

Speaker Question
I have a 2001 S2000 bone stock and I really dislike my sound system. I visited your website and am very impressed with the quality and thought you've put into it. I'd value your comments on the following:

From what you currently offer, can I assume that your Kenwood 3-ways front and rear would provide me with the best audio quality from my OEM HU (I listen mostly to CDs and AM talk-radio)? I want the best you have to offer.

Will the above speakers give me reasonably clear highs (I am NOT an audiophile) or would 2 ways front and rear with future tweeters be a better choice?

Are the above speakers my best choice if future plans include a new HU and Subs.

My plans are to purchase front and rears from you with harnesses, etc., and possibly the new boxed Sub you carry and later have my local Tweeter retailer install a HU and tweeters (I might do it if a reasonably skilled person can install it w/o too much trouble).

Sorry for all of the questions but after many months enjoying S2KI I have come to respect your opinion.

Lucid,

My plans are similar to hebetjb's except that I have an 02 and want to keep my OEM HU and potentially add amps and a Sub in the future if I'm still not happy with the sound. My concern is that I want to replace the speakers only once and don't want to have to upgrade again if I add an amp.

I know this information exists somewhere in this forum but I do not know what the specs for my 02 HU are (and can't find them on the Honda Site either) so I don't know how much the rears and the new fronts are really going to improve the sound system.

Look forward to your responses

For some reason PMs - outgoing weren't working for me... Email me if you have any more questions.

The 3-ways for both front and rear are excellent choices for OEM and aftermarket systems. However if you you SURE to upgrade to an amp you may want to consider a component system (tweeter, woofer, crossover). A Component system would be more work and yes sound better but you since new speaker wire to the doors needs to be fished through (the tough part) the rest shouldn't be so bad.

If you just change you deck (maybe a better idea?) you would yield double the power output, a cleaner signal and would not have to rewire the doors.

Most people are pleased changing their door speakers and adding rears to their OEM systems and good number of them are happy with the setup without expending anymore towards it.

Lucid is very quick with emails and I ordered this exact thing from him. Looking forward to the install later this week when I take a long road trip.

If you guys want, I have a Sony Mavica, I'll take pictures for the install and / or finished results. Hoping I can get this done in less than an evening.

thunderchicken,

Thanks!!! I assume you ordered the Kenwood 3-ways front and rear and you have an 02 HU; if not please correct me. I'd be very interested in your install experience, pictures and especially your opinion of the sound improvement with top up and top down at hiway speeds!

I'm not hyping myself (too much) on these 3-ways, but when originally testing these with a 2002 deck driving them alone I did a blind test with someone. They were surprised it was the stock deck and not an aftermarket driving them.

Also if you do plan an amp, just go with components for the doors. You can tune down the rears (or high pass or add bass blockers). Then you can run the amp's crossover at through and have the passive crossover on the component network the signal. Coaxials to an amp aren't that great.

Thanks for the reply Lucid! I'll order the 3-ways for the front and rear and upgrade the HU later - don't think I"ll be adding an amp after all. I think I'll be content with that based on all of the favorable threads I've seen.

Cant wait to get them!!!!!!!!

Top down driving is one of the best reasons to upgrade I found.

I couldn't hear crap with the top down, especially with my leg blocking the drivers side speaker.

At first I upgraded the door speakers to Polks....blew them up recently.

Put in the new head unit which added some good power, but I still had a hard time with my leg blocking the damn door speaker.

Finally went to the rears, which so far have made the greatest difference. I can hear the stereo clearly while on the highway which is a major improvement over stock where I'd have to crank it all the way up to hear a muffled distorted mess.

I'm always going on about this because I feel its probably the greatest thing I've added to the car, which it lacks stock.

Hebertjb, your first stereo mod should be the rear speakers.

With the rear speakers, you can actually hear the music top down on highway.

I have Kenwood mp819, kenwood 1677 speakers and rear speakers (polk-dx4 They were on sale for about 100 bucks so I snatched one)

For about 170 bucks you can improve your sound enormously.
