Default Radar detector for my dad's birthday

I have a V1, and was going to get my dad a radar detector for his birthday. Which one would you guys get. I figured I would probably spend around $300 or so, which puts another V1 out of line. I searched and read the 8500 looks to be pretty good. It might be old by now, so I figured I would ask.

Thanks

I've got an Escort Solo2 my fiancee's dad bought me. It was about $320. Probably not quite as good as a V1, but it beats a fuzzbuster, and battery powered=portable + no cords.

8500's good. Plenty of people have it and like it.

I'd get a V1 if you can afford it. You know it already rocks.

The solo is only on about 10% of the time in order to save battery. This could result in a 1 seond delay in getting the warning. 1 second could be the difference betweem and

If I bought one for me - V1. Someone else - 8500 or V1 depending on who it was. My dad would appreciate the 8500 features more (auto mute, etc..), my brothers would rather have the added capability of the V1.

There used to be a way of putting your name on a list with Valentine One to get a return at a lower cost. Since they offer a 30 day no question guarantee, they occasionally get returns that they used to resell at a discount (after they check it for any problems). Anyway, it couldn't hurt to ask them about it.
