Default Radio reception awful - why?

I have had an amp installed and all sounds great, except that my radio reception (FM/UHF) is now dreadful. I took it back to the installer who checked the connections behind the HU, and even tried a booster but to no avail. Removing the antenna made things even worse.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what has the installer forgotten to reconnect? And if not, is it worth getting a new antenna (Hirschmann has been recommended)

Thanks

sounds like your installer didn't connect the wire that supplies power to the antenna amplifier

or it could be that the plug to your antenna came undone

I had horrible AM (none actually) reception after I had a head unit and some speakers installed. Would this be the same problem? According to the guy did it, "that's impossible."

Well, after extensive investigations today, we've discovered the problem lies with the digital amplifier used. The installer, who is also the distributer for these amps - AltoMobile, is going to contact the manufacturer on Monday to see if they have a fix for it. The problem occurred with 2 different amps, and was fixed by trying a different 'A/B amp'.

If the manufacturer can't come up with a solution, can anyone recommend some 4channel amps that will fit on top of the fuel tank please?

Thanks

We have an amplifier at the base of the antenna. If you pull away the trunk liner, you'll see it. There is a power lead as part of the wiring harness behind the OEM HU. If you change HUs, you need to supply that power lead with 12V. AM reception is the first to go when the ant. amplier is not powered.

Thanks X, but AM reception is fine, and it was definitely the amp design causing the problem - it did exactly the same with 2 amps from the same manuacturer, and swapping it for a Diamond Audio amp cured it completely. There must be something not right with the design of the Alto amps, maybe something to do with being class D? We'll find out in time I guess.

It's a pity because the quality of sound from this tiny amp, is very good indeed.
