Default Remote light for radar

Has anyone successfully installed a remote warning light for the Passport 8500 or V1? When cruising over 85 MPH (theoretically speaking of course) with tunes playing, I don't always notice when the alarm goes off. I always drive with the radar at full volume. I thought a bright LED or simlar light installed in the line of sight (on top of the steering column or just above the tach) would be helpful.

I know both companies have a "remote" available, but they both seem bulky to put in the line of sight while driving. I was hoping someone has tried using the same wiring setup as the OEM remotes to install a custom remote warning light.

A second (but less desired) alternative might be to somehow make the radar warning louder (which could also be more obnoxious for day-to-day driving). My 8500 just isn't loud enough--even after selecting the "annoying" tones setting and having the radar unit on the left-hand corner of the dash.

Any ideas? Pictures of a successful install?

Have you considered adapting an earphone jack?

Mordi-

I have been using the V1 hardwired since the car was new with the remote display mounted directly in front of the "SEL" and "TRIP" buttons on the right-hand side of the dash.

Additionally, Valentine has a remote audio adapter that:
  1. Has its own speaker
  2. Has a jack for either earphones or an external speaker for CB's and the like
  3. Allows you to control volume and operating mode
  4. Attaches simply

I just finished installing my Passport 8500 w/ the hardwired Smartcord. This allow one to run at night in "Dark Mode" and mute the detector w/o reaching over to the unit.

Bad S2K:

Is the remote light bright enough to get your attention? When concentrating on the road?

I noticed that the V1 seemed much louder than the 8500 in my side by side testing. I didn't do any measurements though.

Looks good but just don't mistake it as a shifter light ...
