hey, i have the stock HU in my 01 s2k. i have a set of boston acoustics rally 60 series speakers which made a world of difference to me. i am now at the stage where i want it louder, but i dont want to change out the HU as i cant be bothered fiddling with the dash controls.
my concerns are that installing rear speakers behind the seats in the panel will lead to them being muffled, much like when i place a bag in the passenger footwell muffles the speakers.
also, will running a small amp help??
i also have never understood how using a sub in the boot of the s2k will help as its in an enclosed space that is separated from the cabin of the car. i can understand maybe in a hatch where it has no blockages, and maybe in a sedan where there is only the rear seats blocking. but to me, in the s2k, the sound needs to battle through a lot of obstacles to get to the drivers ear. then again, im no audio expert.
get s-pods for rear channels. No muffling and they take 5.25" components for good range. They also look stock too.
As far as loudness, replace the stock HU first. The stock HU only pushes ~7WRMS continuous power, while the typical aftermarket pushes 17-25WRMS (TWICE as loud). These decks also allow for future expansion to an amp if you are still not satisfied (the stock HU requires additional wires to make it compatible with an external amp). The aftermarket decks also push cleaner sound as well.
You should first get S-pods to see if 2 more speakers will suffice your needs. If not, replace the HU with an aftermarket one. If this is still not good enough, wire up an amplifier for the cabin speakers.
who was the one who fed you the lie that the Stock Head unit can produce good sound?
I pray that you will find the path to sonic satisfaction, and you abandon the cursed stock Headunit. Now is the time to free yourself from the chains that bind you to mediocre sound. The challenge of the DCI can be beaten with determination and minor effort.
I believe in you; we believe in you.

and John.... read the other posts please, double wattage does not equal Twice as loud.

The trunk is actually vented into the passenger cabin. The panels that you would cut to install rear speakers have the vents in them. You WILL notice a difference with a Sub in the trunk, er boot.
As mentioned above, if you amplify the stock HU you would need to use line level inputs. This is basically speaker level sound from the HU to an amp which then processes and amplifies the sound to produce speaker level output. A pre-amplified output from the HU to a direct input on the amp sound SIGNIFICANTLY better. Unfortunatly the stock HU does not have any pre-amplified outputs. Also, as noted above, the stock HU sucks ass. Amplifying it will only make it sound worse.
All the connections to a new HU, including a DCI to make the dash controls work, are made sitting at a table, not curled up into an unfortable ball in the footwell. It's VERY easy to do and should not add more than 1 hour of work to your project. Even if you are a complete novice to car audio.

Where is this? I saw someone had an 8" sub in the side well of the trunk...would this low end make it into the cabin OK? Thanks
for the separation between the trunk and the cabin, there is MINIMAL sound deadening....I opened it up last night to run amp wires, and other than a little strip of metal just behind the passenger side (I ran the RCA's through the little hole to keep them together) there is just a thin layer of insulation matting. Pull your spare, and poke the insulation, and if your arm is long enough, it will come through into the cabin.
This car is not like the miata. My first generation had a solid metal firewall between the trunk and the cabin.
