steve,
I had a simalr thought because my mom has an older sony laptop with an appropriately sized screen I was going to replace for her for the holidays.
I've heard the the issue with seperating a laptop from it's screen is that the interface wiring isnt exactly something you can pick up at radio shack. And although in theory you can find a spare laptop screen cheaply and get a nice small box machine cheap too, you can't connect the two easily.

I was keeping it quiet cause I haven't really done to much research, but now that you bring it up maybe someone here has some insight..

Thanks Corey but i was thinking more on the lines of adding a laptop in the trunk and then running a line from the video out on the laptop to a 7 inch screen off a goose neck mounted off the tunel oh and a wireless key board

a laptop is the only viable option as powering a desktop is tricky as a system that can provide STABLE voltage is very expensive to power it.

you could us a 7" screen, but remember many have very low resolutions and are interlaced; a pc display on that would look like ass and you wouldn't be able to read anything.

www.mp3car.com

i had a headless (no lcd) PC in my trunk a year ago, but have since junked it and bought an mp3 head unit.

you will need to get one of those 7" xenarc (liliput) LCD displays that runs on 12v. and you will need a 12 volt dc to dc power supply (such as the zootjeff/jeff mucha unit or the opus one) and then you'll need a head unit with aux in, and the rest is just gravy.

I'd put a modded xbox in the trunk. Youll be able to play mp3s from the hard drive. You can then use the remote or controller to cycle through the menus. Let me know if you have any questions.

One of the guys at the Spugen BBQ in SoCal had a touchscreen LCD controlling a PC that was mounted in the dash. I think you can make it out in this pic.

You dont want a laptop. You want a "desktop" with a Xenard Touchscreen monitor.

go to Xenarc.com, and check out the computer and screen packages over there.
