Default Some basic audio questions

Hey guys, I am thinking about upgrading the stock speakers - 4 inch up front, and 6x8 in rear.

Whats the difference between 2way, 3way, and 4way? Do they all need to be the same? (All 2 way for instance). Can I mix and match different brand and models?

Sorry if these questions sound stupid, but I really dont know all that much....

Btw, when I bought my car it came with a fairly nice Jensen head unit.

First thing I would do is get a new head.

2-way = a woofer and tweeter
3-way = a woofer, a midrange speaker and a tweeter
4-way = a woofer, a midrange speaker, a tweeter and a super tweeter
or
4-way = a woofer, 2 midrange speaker and a tweeter

You can mix and match. Go with what sounds good to yourself. Go to your local electronics store and give a bunch of high end speakers a listen. Everyone has different taste in sound, so you'll have to see which ones you like. Check Alpine, B.A., Diamond audio, FocaL, etc..etc..

Alright thanks, what head unit would you suggest? Something cheap preferably, lots of features not necessary...

Actually, the front left, and right rear speaker are nonfunctional, so I was looking to upgrade in the process of fixing it

How are the Blaupunkt head units? There seems to be a large section of them around 100 bucks...more specifically the "Tampa Bay" model.
