First of all - thanks to Lucid for a great product. The harness worked beautifully. Overall I'm very pleased with the improvement that rear speakers add. After all - we have 2 extra channels (with what I believe to be 30 watts per channel) already built in to the OEM head unit... why not use them?
I have an '02 and just wanted better sound. I thought I would try the low-budget approach first. Picked up a Lucid harness and used a combination of instructions from the Lucid site and the H&A site.
I went with the Kenwood 3-ways - KFC-1387. While the bass isn't what I had hoped for, the mids and highs are pretty good. The "sound stage" is nice - a full sound can be had with just the addition of rear speakers. It's much easier to hear your music at speed with the rears on the job.
The first thing I did (after removing the rear panels and putting in the speakers)
was to remove the passenger seat. Very easy to do (too easy, if you ask me... just get 12 and 14mm sockets and it's off)
Next, I removed the head unit using the Lucid instructions. Pretty straightforward.
Cutting the holes in the rear panels was easier than I thought... I just used my Ryobi (Dremel style) with a cutting blade after looking a few examples of speaker positioning here on the site. Try and cut low on the panels so the magnets clear the opening...
The one thing I wasn't sure about was how to run the wires. By pulling the clips on the console and removing one screw on the side of the console, I was able to run the wires underneath the console for a clean appearance.
One tip on removing the clips - pry on the clips with a flat blade screwdriver instead of pulling on the console to "pop" the clips.
There's a little velcro holding the vinyl of the console cover to the rear piece of vinyl. Pull it back and it's perfect for running the wires up to the speakers... Run the driver's side speaker wires behing the "secret compartment"
Tested it before buttoning it up and it sounded good! We had a bit of sun today in Seattle so I naturally had to do some high speed sound checks and the only bad thing is that the stereo now competes with my beautiful sounding Spugen setup...
Vacuum? :-) I was wondering when someone might ask me that!
It's all clean now! I couldn't believe how dusty the vinyl was behind the seats, too!
I'm glad you liked the little write-up. Rear speakers are way up there in the bang for the buck mods for our car - especially for the '02 models with the more PWRMKR - I mean more powerful head units and better front speakers.
