Next HU I install in an S I will take pictures of the tabs. At least this was the case with the 2002 MY cars. It can be done without it but it fits better if you do. Look at the brackets and you'll see the little round tabs that protrude from the bracket.
Ohhhh......now I gotcha.

I should be fired for questioning you John.

I had my 9857 professionally installed. The radio door closes nicely with the volume control knob out.

Maybe that's the difference between removing the tabs that Darknight was talking about and not removing them...
nope the door closes with the knob out still.

9k = heaven - nope! they fit perfect and sound amazing... although i think of upgrading to the ES-07 woofers for alittle more thump. the 6.5 do sound good though without a doubt.

darkknight1999 - ill check out those little tabs closer when i pull my deck out

Yeah honestly you have me wondering if its just the earlier MY car's... I wouldn't think so but maybe. But hey as long as you get it to fit properly, that's cool

I've been wrong plenty of times Dave's. But it clearly can be installed either way. I doubt they changed the HU that much... I just know that you can center the brackets better if there removed which means you can center the HU face directly in the middle of the radio door. That said, if you can get it to fit great without doing that, all the power to ya

well first thing i would do is, go through the specs/features on alpine website and compare the 2 units to see what suits your needs. according to alpines website, participating dealers give you a free ipod direct cord which is 30 of value when purchasing the 9857. which brings the cost difference to roughly a 100. id go with the 9857

Crutchfield.com will let you compare them side-by-side. Performance specs are identical. The major difference I see is the 9857 is the Biolite display. I'd have a hard time justifying the additonal cost for the 9857. There doesn't appear to be any difference between the two of them as far as sound quality and features.

The 9857 may be more iPod friendly because of the display.

I've been looking to replace my HU with an Alpine as well. The major difference between the two you mentioned is the way the iPod hooks in. Supposedly the "new" Alpine iPod link which requires just a cable ($30) instead of an interface ($100) is much faster and has more features. So, if you have an iPod or are thinking of getting one, I say go with the 9857.

Actually both the 9856 and the 9857 use the full speed cable.

The 9857 can use a wired remote vs. the 9856 is IR only. I believe that, plus the display, are the only differences.
