I'm considering OEM head rest speakers, but the cost is ugly. What other alternatives are there and were can I check out behind the seat after market speaker options?
Also, by including either head rest or other additional speakers do they require more power to run them? Amp? or can the current system run them?
Or, you can buy speakers and do the cutting yourself and save a lot of money. You might consider doing the tweeters like I did them, which gives you nearly the performance of S-Pods or the factory tweeter units for a fraction of the cost. Pictures here:
The only comment posted about the installation claims there will be a degraded soundstage, but I don't see the difference between it and the high priced spreads. The sound is much better than stock with lots less labor and capital invested than in S-Pods or the factory tweeters.
I have S Pods mounted with Infinity 5 1/4" component speakers... and had the Lucid speaker system.... the S Pods are clearly superior in every way... add tremendous depth to music and I gain about 1" of leg room due to the S Pods mounted above the back seat allowing me to more fully recline the seat. I generally have the forward speakers in front door at Plus 3 or 4.....
S Pods...and S2000 .... dont leave home without them.

spend your money on a great amp and great front speakers.
the rears in such a small car is unnecessary
oh and don't forget the sub
The OEM headrest speakers suck, don't waste your time or money.
The lucids get lost with OEM power and lucid is a hard company to work with. The spods are REALLY expensive, but the really help if you stick with the OEM radio, as they get sound near your ears, but you still won't hear them over that truck next to you. The OEM HU will drive rear speakers but you need to install wiring off the harness and to the rears.
I wouldn't bother to amp the original HU as I think S2KSuzuka's post recommends, start with a reciever (and DJ Qubes dash controls so that you get even more function from the dash controls). Following that with an amp and front speakers will do you pretty proud - with my Focal Utopias 165w's I don't really need a sub. Rear speakers still help balance the sound in louder environments, so I'd say they are necessary, I am installing Focal 136w's in them.
Well I have a nice set of Alpine SPX-177a's behind my seats and I gotta tell you they sound sweet. Here's a few pic's...
BTW I have heard both rear speaker behind the seats as well as in the headrest and I have to say, in my opinion the ones in the rear panels sound better, because the ones in the hoops are so close to your head that it sounds funny, but thats me. I would say find someone in you local club and give both a listen then decide.
