speaker whine mystery
A whine sound just showed up in my new system that I did not notice before.
We switched out to another amp and the whine is still there. It is not affected by engine rpm. It increases with the gain on the amp. It's not the rca cables, jumped another set to the back. Even tried a different head unit.
the power cable, rca, and speaker wires are all well separated from each other. The headunit and amp are grounded to the same bolt. The only thing I haven't done yet is to shorten the ground cable, which will happen when the amp goes in to the amp rack (for now it's in temporarilly).
Any ideas on why this is happening? Why did it start but washn't happening before?

Bingo.....
John got it....
Your ground for your amp is too long. A ground wire should never be longer than 2 feet, 4 feet max.
Where is your amp? Under the seat....???

This problem wasn't there, then suddenly started, and I have moved bolts. I've ground the head unit to the same bolt. I've changed amps, headunit, crossovers, jumped the rcas to make sure it wasn't them or their placement, checked that nothing is touching.
It doesn't increase with the engine but does get worse with the amp gain.
Is there anything else that it can be other than the grounding? Also, the amp is not yet mounted to wood, but sits on a cushion for now.

How about a ground directly to the battery. When i fixed the ground in my car the whine went away. My whine was with the factory system and also did not change with engine speed. Installed ground wires but that is not neccessary. Just clean the ground to the car off the battery and run a ground block for your stereo system. Sometimes this will work.
