Are they a big difference from stock speakers? Do they work with the stock headunit or do you need a separate amp?

Don't buy speakers without hearing them for yourself. Everyone's ears are different.

I upgraded the h/u and added a 100 watt alpine amp. Trust me, the speakers are great and a value too

^^Great compared to?

Have you listened to many other speakers? Or amps? Or HU's? Did you isolate to just the different speakers? Or was it a diff amp/HU with each set of speakers?

OP: Go listen to them yourself. I personally will never put anything Alpine into any vehicle I own (nor will I install Alpine for a friend). Alpine is good - but is mostly hype. There are better out there for your money. Do your research for yourself before plunking down your hard earned cash.

I don't like Alpine HUs because they are obnoxiously bright. No amount of EQ can correct for it - it has to do with the components they use to filter the audio signal inside the HU.

I don't like Alpine PDX amps because they're Class D. Class D amplifiers have a switching frequency - and while they're fine for powering subwoofers (big difference between 100Hz audio signal and 40Khz switching freq for example), there's not enough of a separation for the highs (25Khz to 40Khz). The audio quality just isn't there. They're small, and they're inexpensive, and they give bragging rights for most "rated" power - but that doesn't mean that you have a system that actually sounds good.

The build I have in my car ran me about $1500 and puts down a measly 700W (approx). But I bet it sounds better (and possibly louder) than most "1500W" Alpine systems.

Alpine is popular due to excellent marketing. It's that simple. I commend Alpine for their marketing skills. I refuse to run their products in any of my vehicles.

A good rule of thumb is: If it's something that Best Buy or Circuit City stocks in their stores, I wouldn't touch it (with very VERY few exceptions). For the $$$, you can always find something better. Most of the Online exclusive stuff is still crap.
