He said he hit 130db in his last car, which I am guessing was not a convertible.. and not his current S2k..

I got 121 out of a pair of 8's, and 125 out of a JL 10 in a too-small box. Keep the top up for best results. With enough power you should be able to get close to 130 with a JL 10W3 in their stealthbox.

I'm hoping for at least mid 130s out of my new sub, if it ever gets here. I think my Radio Shack db meter is only good to 130 though...

Even with the top up it is really hard to build the needed pressure! I think I am close to 130. Hopefully tmw we will have time to test it.

Well for those not up to speed on the stereo SPL thing. Hitting 120 is pretty easy. Its that extra 10 db or more that gets really hard! Also there is a huge differene between hitting 120-130 DB at 100 hz vs 50 hz Its a much deeper sound and hits a lot harder!

I did my SPL readings are done by a older but still professional grade SPL sound meter that gives not only SPL but reading level of sound quality(looks like an active EQ) This way you can tune it for sound quality shows. And show you where your lacking in your music levels. This is done with Pink noise. Its like White noise but its only in the auditory level white noise is the entire spectrum of sound(from what I have been told). Both sound the same.

Oh as for the car it was a 1988 Accord. That was the hardest car to get bass in. I cut holes in the back deck to get more bass into the cabin. As for bass in a CONVERTABLE. Check this out we installed 2 12" Hi Fonics Olympians in the back of a convertable RX-7 1988 as well. Firing up into the trunk lid. Pop the trunk NO BASS! Latch that trunk and HOLD ON TO YOUR HAIR!!! This thing will rattle your car........2-3 cars away! He was hitting 127 db but it FELT harder than mine that was hitting louder via the SPL meter. He ended up taking out the trunk interior liner which ported the noise into the cabin much better. I think he was hitting the 130's like I. Though again yes it felt louder and sounded louder too. Had to do with the slot loading of the speakers!

As for hitting 130 with a single 10. I don't think so! Especially in our car! As I said before 120 is very high though not super hard to hit.

No chance you will hit 130 SPL with a single JL 10. At least not in the trunk of an S2000. Remember that with peak efficiency, you need either double the speakers or double the power to achieve 3db more right? A spec ported enclosure for most of the JL10's will be good for 123-125db at most.

I have two JL 10w3's in a spec'd sealed enclosure, and while its extremely loud for a convertable, it is not 130db. My CRX's would only break that barrier with a pair of 12's using the same amplifier. But it is an acoustically supierior car. I am not raggin' on the S2000, obviously I love mine. Just getting 130db out that setup is probably not going to happen.

You guys are right, I take back most of what I said in my last post - I keep forgetting these things are convertibles. As a (bad) reference I was thinking of my friend's 126db out of a stealthbox/10W6 in his 4Runner, but even with all that airspace it's still got to be easier to get loud than in the S2000. I wonder who will be the first to buy a hardtop purely as part of their stereo install?

I hear ya Jerry - CRXs are awesome stereo cars. I had a pair of JL 8's in twin .62ft^3 ported enclosures in my '85 Si, it was heaven! Hair would stand on end, felt like my chest would cavitate, all that good stuff. I've spent at least 3x the time and money on the S2000's system and so far the bass is maybe half as good.

Right now I'm waiting for my custom box and sub from Bing (the fiberglass man) to get here, and since I'm an impatient bastard, went and bought an Eclipse 88100DVC tonight. Click here to see how it fared in a basic .5ft^3 sealed box. After playing around with this new toy, I doubt I'll ever reach 130, even with the beefier new 12" sub. 126-128 looks nice and achievable though.

Keep it crankin' everyone!

Jason

I agree and thanks for fixin my spelling mistakes, TEACH!!

I like the Hardtop option to maximize pressure! Great idea! Would need a lot of silicone though!!

But then your soft top is folded down over the back shelf, which is the best place to vent for the subs, making the subs much quieter. Already thought about this.
