Looking at FINALLY getting as S2000, considering one with a sub in the trunk and upgraded
speakers. But others without are obviously selling for less. I'm curious how may of you
folks found a stereo upgrade crucial? Or is the stock in an '02 and newer somewhat decent?

By the way, this is the setup in a current '03 I'm looking at-- I can email pics to anyone who can give me more insight--- sorry, I'm a bit of a car stereo newbie!

JL amplifier and subwoofer, hex diamond speakers,
pioneer CD/ MP3 player

Thanks

if you get a goodset of componant speakers and a nice sub with good power you should be good
I have Boston Acoustic pros up front and a RF Hx2 sub in the rear and will be putting rear mb quartz soon

it depends on what you want to hear...
i want the hear the sound of my spugen duals and vtec-
so my interior sound system is not that important to me.
my only sound mod was the rear speakers, and they do make an incredible difference. now i have to mute the sound system just before vtec!

That's my plan. Good stereo sound, decent and somewhat audible at hwy speeds with top down... but of course a GREAT mute button for V-teching

Iwould say ditch the cheesy head unit. Get a decent unit, a Lucid DCI to retain the dash controls and upgraded 6.5" speakers for a start. You can always add an amp and sub later.

i depends on your definition of "critical". i'd say filling the tank with fuel, keeping the oil topped off and having a decent set of tires, critical. everything after that is in the "nice to have" category.

Good point, nothing beyond water food and shelter is critical, but in a relative sense, I just wondered how useless the stock stereo is at different/all speeds.

Meanwhile, not exactly sure of watts, but here's the set up in one of the '03's I'm looking at, I can email pics to anyone who's be able to further give me there opinion.

JL amplifier and subwoofer, hex diamond speakers,
pioneer CD/ MP3 player

i've got an '03. it's stock, including audio, and i don't really have a problem with the sound. it's not great, but i'd put in the category of adequate. the S is a soft top that's got a killer engine/exhaust note and, assuch, i'm not of the point fo spending big $$ on a stereo upgrade. if it was done on a limited scale, maybe. btw-in one of our cars, we've got a mark levinson system. it's great, but not worth the price of admission. maybe i'm just not into mobile stereo. i do enjoy listening to my audio equipment at home in a nice, controlled envirnment.
