Default stereo upgrade question?

Im looking to replace my front door speakers with higher quality component speakers but also wanting a tweeter run off the same channel? is it a cross over device I need? anyone else done a simular front door speaker setup?
is it not as basic as taking the + & - terminal on the component speaker and matching that to the + & - of the tweeter? then hooking that to the channel or will i get to much low frequencies which would blow the tweeter?

Are you running an amp?

Most component systems come with a crossover. You will need it and want it.

There are many component systems out there:

1) Focal
2) MB Quart
3) Diamond
4) Infinity Kappa Perfect
5) Boston Acoustics
6) CDT Audio
7) Polk
8) Oz Audio
9) JL Audio
10) etc...

I'm fairly local to you (work in Chalfont St Peter) and live in Berkshire, so if you need some help let me know.

A few basic questions:
1) What model/year car do you have (do you already have tweeters in the door)
2) What Head Unit are you running?
3) Are you running an amp?
4) Are you running rear speakers?
5) What's your budget - this will pretty much decide where you could go with any changes
6) How would you describe what's wrong with your current setup, and what are you trying to get to? E.g. Just want more volume at higher speed, how important is sould quality, do you want a sub...

So many questions, but answering these will help us guide you.

Any decent set of component speakers you buy will come with crossovers. Even if you buy a set of dirt cheap tweeters to add on, these usually come with a capacitor that serves as a high pass filter.

If this was not the case you couldn't just hook them up in parallel with your mid range driver without damaging the tweeter as you already guessed.

As jocko2 said, a good component speakers will come with crossovers. After remove the stock door speakers, all you need to do is connect the speaker wires to crossovers' inputs, then connect the crossovers' outputs to woofers and tweeters accordingly, as shown in the speaker manual. If the component speakers you are buying have large magnets that can not be fitted to the stock speaker baskets, then you will need to cut the back of the baskets and using the rings to mount your new woofers.

If you have more questions, please let us know, we will try to help as best we can.

I'll take pictures tonight of my install (I've got some already just not enough...

Look at my sig and you'll see what I'm running.

IIRC the Sony XPLODS haven't had good reviews on this forum, I haven't listened to them myself.

I guess if you've got mini-disc then you have to invest in a mini-disc HU, I went for an Alpine CD/MP3 HU and will replace my CD/MP3 changer with an iPod when Alpine release the iPod interface later this year.

I note that Sony HU is 23.2 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels, that isn't that much, but if your not replacing your fronts anyway it may be enough.

If you do go ahead and install rear speakers then check the Electronics FAQ to ensure they don't exceed the mounting depth available.

What are your expectations by upgrading the HU and adding rear speakers. *I* don't think its goingn to give you a significant improvement when driving at speed, but that's just my view.

HH,
Well I took lots of pictures last night, but my microdrive in the camera had a minor failure (bad sector) which resulted in loosing all the pictures after a certain point on the drive.

I'd even taken the door skins off again to photograph the speakers and their mounting...

I may try again tonight and hope the drive it's about to die completely.
