@rworne
I would say they last longer as you would own your car...they don't produce any heat so the is almost no wear...
similar to LED's
@Minty Winty
to match suzuka blue I would have to use a filter...I'll have to try if that works
just material costs I would say around 80 bucks (cabling,inverter,EL sheets,plastic cover (made on mesure) new logo)
but it's a lot of work actually

stocky,
Be careful about saying they last as long as the car will...while the EL sheet will continue to light up, it's ability to do so will slowly diminish with use. It will vary by who manufactures the sheet, but half-brightness life could be as low as a few hundred hours (or as high as 1000s of hours)...just something to keep in mind when sourcing sheets for use on this one. Sheet life will also depend on design/quality of the inverter...if you stick with the stock design you'll probably be OK, but don't try to modify it for higher brightness (increase the voltage or frequency) else you'll shorten the sheet's lifespan (possibly significantly).

Oh, I forgot to mention...if you're looking for good quality, high brightness sheets, Digikey has new sheets roughly A4 in size for about $35. You should be able to get at least 3 or 4 door sills out of one sheet. The inverters will run you about $12 each, and I can vouch for their quality. You should be able to cut material costs down to about $40/car with those. Money for your time is another matter

True, I never thought about only being on while the door is open...if that's the case, they'd last for quite a while. Another thing I would worry about, though, is their durability to high heat and low cold...I have no experience with temp extremes on these things, so I'm hoping someone else can chime in here.
