Default Sub Advice

So, I know a pretty good ammount myself, but one area I haven't gotten much into is shallow mount subs.

Just as some background info, I'm building a custom sub box for my car, in the soft top tray behind the seats. I have plenty of air space, but not much mounting depth. I have around 6" (probably a little less) minus the half inch I'm gonna lose from the quarter inch thick wood I'm using. So realistically I'm guessing around 5.5" mounting depth.

So, anyways, I'm trying to decide what sub I want to use. Sub wise I usually don't stray from Rockford Fosgate, as my goal is quality rather than just how loud it can be, and Rockford has never dissapointed me. So I'm looking for a 10" sub that will fit and sound good.

The problem is that MOST of the P2s are too deep, and I'm not sure if I'll be satisified with the P1s. So I was looking around and I potentially found the solution to my problem. Apparently Rockford Fosgate makes a shallow mount P3 that hold 300W RMS and is only 3.5" deep ( Rockford Fosgate P3SD210 ). From what I've read most people are extremely impressed with it and thought it sounded great.

I've just always seen/heard that shallow mount subs were no good, but this one looks awesome. What do you think? Should I go for the shallow mount, or go for a P2 or P1?

I'm not sure what to do. I mostly listen to rock, so I don't really need extreme lows; which is the only thing I could imagine the shallow mount might lose.

Well, I am yet to see JL audio produce a product that isnt good. They are not always worth what you pay for them... but they always make a good product

Oooo. That's a very interesting sub. One wonders what the volume of the area inside the S2000 spare tire is... I think it's probably still a no go, but interesting nonetheless. Imagine having a sub, and a spare, and no loss of storage space.

I'll be honest...you can find all kinds of people that think Jensen sounds good (and reviews to boot). Doesn't mean Jensen isn't crap

I'd recommend either one of the Stereo Integrity subs - the Mag v4 or the BM.

The Mag is a 5.5" depth, .85cu - 1.1 cu ft volume, 500-1000W 12" sub. And it has incredible sound quality.

The BM is a 3.5" mounting depth (overall 4.5" depth with 3/4" MDF enclosure), .5cu ft, 300-600W 12" sub. While the Mag is virtually distortion free, so there's no slap whatsoever from the deep bass notes - and that's what most people think is SQ... - the BM has been designed to distort just a little bit.

BM is still in pre-production, should be released in the next 3-6months. Rumored to be priced around $150 shipped when it's released.

The Mag is available and is priced at $250 shipped.

And what about the sub I posted? I am yet to see Rockford produce something that disappointed me. And they are much more reasonably priced than JL in most cases...

i have used the jl 13tw5, i was impressed,
i am now testing the exile xtec 10, i have the prototype box done and am very happy with its sound, i have a box in the tool wheel, memphis 12, i am able to switch from front to back, and i like the front passanger side footwell box much better, you dont loose much room, the box sits about same distance out as the pedals do on the drivers side. i will do a ne wthread with pictures real soon.

So no one has any particular experience with this sub? It looks really good.

if your soft top is removed - you have lots of room back there, i would build a encloser that takes up that space, i bet i could get 3 10's in there.
