Generally I listen to only one FM station, so I've gotten use to pressing the audio mode button once to get from CD to FM, and three times to cycle back to CD. What confuses me, though, is why sometimes when I eject a CD the sound system is silent until I load another CD, but other times it goes to the AM mode, which more than not ends up playing annoying white noise. Any ideas?

 

While this doesn't directly answer your question, you could avoid the white noise by choosing an AM station that either has talk on it or it's broadcasting silence (there's a suprising number of those...). Next time it switches over to AM, you get silence...or talk.
