Default Tool well box prices...

Hey-

I am thinking about picking one up for a 10" sub. There is one on ebay for $140 shipped. What would I expect to pay for someone to make one? I know JL sells one for like $500 or something obscene like that. Is this a good deal? Here is the link.....PLEASE if its a good deal, do not screw me by buying it out from under me.

thanks

John

thanks.

I was going to make one out of MDF, but it did not quite fit right. It would also cost me like $50 just for the carpeting! I will try and get this one...hopefully for cheaper than the $120 + shipping as the "Buy it Now" option!

Thanks

John

What is better.....MDF or Fiberglass? There are now 2 up on ebay. One is MDF and has a cover board to protect the speaker from stuff in the trunk and the other is the one in the previous link. The MDF one looks cleaner, but the carpet does not exactly match. He is asking $150 shipped for the MDF one with cover plate. How much would a shop charge to have one made this way? Are there any advantages / disadvantages of using wood over fiberglass (other than weight)? Is $150 too much?

thanks

You should be able to geet the carpet and contact cement @ Home depot for around $10...

at my local home depot they do not have carpeting to match. I am a contractor here in FL and have a business account with them and would LOVE to write all that stuff of under the the business. I tried making the box outta MDF but the lines just didnt match up....guess I am not THAT handy. Still gotta get more experience with jig-saw.

Thanks

Glassing is just more versatile since you can contour the mold over any shape that you want. MDF is a cheaper and less difficult solution but you will be limited to flexibility. If you decide to do glassing, make sure you build it up correctly and it doesn't flex as much. You can combine MDF and glassing together, which will also work well.

If you have a jigsaw, power drill, and (circular or table) saw, you can make the box yourself. You're looking at around $35, $20 for an MDF sheet, the rest for liquid nails or wood glue, silicone sealant, terminal cups, weather stripping, and a box of drywall screws... all at home depot. Covering is up to you.

I tried...but it was UGLY. Cost me $30 in material. I figure if I can pick one up second hand for $120ish, it will be $ well spent, because it will probably take me 3 more tries to get it right (at $30 a pop....not cheap) to my satisfaction.

The only question I have about the glass one on eBay is whether the glass was thick enough. You can see some creases in the matting in the pictures through the speaker hole. Also, the speaker is not mounted in the center. I am sure the face is MDF and can be traced and re-cut no problem, though.
