Default Touchless wash in the winter could have cost me.

As per everyone's suggestion I finally gave the sunoco touchless car wash a try.

Well that was a bad idea.

The next morning I start my car (drv side door lock was frozen ) and my front door speakers would not work. After 20s or so the drv side one came on (tweeters were fine) and 20s after that the pass side came on but was distorted.

There's a possibility it's either shot or ice built up and was restricting movement of the cone.

Unfortunately I was on the way to the shop to have my car appraised for insurance (details here) so I haven't had any time to look at it.

My Setup:
RF BD500.1 amp for the sub
Memphis Studio ST3004 4ch amp.
Infiniti Kappa 60.5CS front components (with one possible shot mid)
Kenwood dualmag 6.5" rear speakers.

I will check the amp to rule it out when I get my car back. Hopefully after sitting in a warm garage over the weekend it has had time to melt and evaporate.

Anyone have any thoughts or a similar experience? This could have been an expensive car wash

uhhh, who told you to use a carwash to begin with? High pressure is NOT to be used on convertibles. Sorry to hear about your problem.

Assumption is the mother of all f*ck ups...

It might be water, although I am very skeptical about this. Open the door up and check if there is rust on the magnet or anywhere around the speaker and crossover area. Something def got screwed up.

The owner's manual specifically warns against using a car wash as could blow through the seals for the top.

Using a car wash in 20deg weather doesn't sound like a very smart plan on any car.

If you got water in your door panels, then you may have a problem that water just "found." It's possible that your water protection was messed up durring the install of the speakers. Who did the install? You or a shop?

Ok let's forget the fact I went through a car wash. I know it was a mistake so lets not rub it in any further I'm sure each and every one of you here has done something you looked back on and kicked your self for.

Now lets focus on the speaker

The plastic was already removed since it was aftermarket speakers I replaced. So no plastic behind the driver at all.

Water most likely froze onto the speaker.

Jasonoff,

Just so you won't feel too bad, even though I had read not to do it in the manual, I have been through the touchless guys 3 times now. No leaks to speak of. Have never done it in freezing weather.

NEW ENGLAND!!! Touchless car washes save our cars. This nonsense about seals makes me laugh. My S2000, while it may not have been suggested to do so, has been through a touchless down the st. numerous times. Theres an undercarriage spray that i have great faith in, no fancy gimmicks, just high presure water under the car, getting the salt off. If the plastic is gone from inside the door, i'd say water got in there and probably shorted something, when water hits wires that have been frozen the water is going to freeze, and could possibly have shorted something in the door. Crossovers? Speaker connections? All thoughts, but i think you'll have to take the door apart to figure it all out. Good luck!!
