Here's the situation, about three years ago I replaced the stock head unit in my '94 Prelude with a JVC CD unit. . . I was still using the stock speakers and everything was fine until yeasterday.

At some point while driving, my rear speakers went dead (i.e., when I set the fade to rear speakers only, there is no sound at all). The only sound I get is from the front (4) speakers (which would be okay it this was my S )

So the question remains, is my problem:

A. The rear speakers;

B. The head unit; or

C. The wiring to the the rear speakers

Also, is there a relatively easily way to trouble-shoot my system to figure out the problem?

Note, I tend to think its got something to do with the head unit or the wiring, because I've never heard of both rear speakers going completely dead at once. But, considering the speakers have 250K miles of use on them, I'm not too sure.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

 

2 going at once is a bit of a long shot. its most likely the headunit or the wiring. a good easy test is to remove the headunit and tap into the rear speaker wires individually with a 9 volt battery. for example; the pos. and neg of the right rear speaker only. if the wiring and speaker is good it will make a thump sound when you touch the battery terminals momentarily. if they dont thump or pop they are REALLY blown or the wiring is faulty. if it does end up being that the headunit is bad. make sure something like a shorted wire didnt cause it before you replace it and do it all over again. good luck!!

 

If you have a multi-meter you could pull the head unit and probe the harness across the speaker leads and check for the correct resistance. That would verify the wiring all the way back to the speakers. As both failed at once though, I'm voting for that the head unit is busted.

With regards to a multimeter, can I pick one of these up at a Radioshack?

 

Yep, they should have several models to chose from.

when a speaker wire shorts, either all 4 speakers will go or just the front and rear (depending on model).

speakers are likely fine. some head units have 2 fuses, too. My guess is that the wiring shorted out somewhere, likely where there is a bend around a sharp part.
