Default Tweeter placement?

I have an opportunity to replace my door speakers that have a separate but integrated tweeter with separates where I can get the tweeter away from my leg. These new speakers are high quality 6.5 with a 1 in. tweeter that can be mounted any way including angled.

Is there a consensus on best tweeter placement? I have heard installations with tweeters mounted high in the door, in front of the door handle and angled back, and in the pillars. All of those systems sounded good, but were too different to really compare.. (I guess the best sounding one was the install with the angled tweeters in front of the handle).

Has anyone used the same components to sample various tweeter locations? Or at least experimented enough to give the pros and cons of the different placement options?

Here's a pic of where I mounted mine just to give you an idea. JL Audio xr componets. The tweeter is mounted above the panel that holds the 6.5. I was unable to use the angled mount because there was no room beneath for a flush install.

I have not sampled various tweeter locations but I can tell you I was very satisfied with the placement. You don't wanna mount the tweeter to high in the door panel because the sound may become some what distorted with the top down.

Well, anywhere that's not behind you! Just kidding with ya...

I was more concerned with keeping things somewhat stealth (plus I hate having to look at tweeters) than I was with "imaging nirvana" - which is really just in the ear of the beholder anyway. This setup works great for me.

I'm 5'7" so the driver's side tweet is never blocked, but the right side is with leggier (6' and above) passengers. Speakers are Infinity Kappa Perfects getting >100W RMS each.

There's lots of different sounding speakers, tons of different theories on where tweeters should go, and just as many opinions on how a stereo should sound. As a result I don't think there's a concensus, at least, not one that I'll agree to.

Good luck with your system!

Any advice we offer is pure conjecture - each listeners preference is different and each tweeter offers a different on/off axis response.

When I bought my Focal components I wired up the tweeters on a long trailing wire and experimented by placing them in a variety of positions. I initially was thinking of an A pillar tweeter install to save on cutting the door panels but I didn't like having the tweeters so high and distant from the mid-range. I ended up with them down low in the panel like jzr as they offer great imagining off axis (inverted tweeter domes) without sounding overly bright. That said I was hampered in where the (pretty large) tweeters would fit without looking objectionable, I do think that in many cases in front of the door handle looks (and should sound) good. The Focals would have taken my head off there though
