Default Type R or Type X?

I was set on getting the Alpine Type R 6.5 components after reading many glowing reviews here. However on checking Crutchfield.com I found the Type X's on sale for $229 versus the Type R's for $249. Has anyone bought the Type X's yet? Or can comment on them? After reading its specs, the Type X sounds complicated, like 60 jumpers on the crossover to personalize your sound.

I want to buy my speakers from an authorized dealer, if anyone can point me to a set of cheaper Type R's or Type X's i'd greatly appreciate it!

Oh and the speakers will be powered by an Alpine 9835, no amp yet.

Well as Dave said I have the SPX speakers in my car. I actually have to sets I have the SPX-177a's in the front and the SPX-137a's behind the seats.

They fit nice and sound awesome. Just make sure you power them up nice. As for the crossovers...their hugh!....

Have a look:
The 4 x-overs:

Make sure you have enough room to put these,... and put them somewhere nice because they bling all the way home

The rears:

The front:

I have more of the door setup with the door panel off but I have them on my laptop at home.

If you need help just let me know.

Looks awesome! Thanks for the pics.
Did you have any trouble mounting the speakers in the doors? I know they're about 2.8 inches deep. Any spacers required? Would the huge crossovers fit in the doors? I want a stealthy install.

As for powering them up, so far I'm only going to have it run off the HU (alpine 9835) 26w rms. How much are you running to them?

Thanks

As for mounting them in the doors it was easy. I did the tweeter cut out myself but you can mount it behind the stock grille but then you'll have the sound trying to make its way past 2 speaker grilles. As for the woofers, just cut the back out of the stock speaker basket with a Dremel. Piece of cake!

No as for the x-overs. Those will not really fit in the doors, well no... they may fit but I highly recommend you install somewhere in the car the you can get to them with out to much trouble.

And last but not least I highly suggest you get an amp if you buy the SPX's. If you go with the Type-r's you should be ok but with the SPX setup they won't sound right without an amp and some good juice. I think I have 100 watts going to each setup or 100 watts per x-over, and with that they pound.

Just keep in mind that if you buy a higher end speakers they are designed to have more then just the HU's power driving them.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all of your input Darknight1999!
I have a Soundstream Class A 10.2 amp sitting around, but i'm not sure if its suitable for regular speakers. I used it for a bass amp in my old car, but i'll look into running the type X's off of it.

Speaking of the speaker basket, is the basket for bass? By cutting it open, would I be losing bass from the woofers in teh door?

Nope. Its just there to protect the speaker. Its mostly soild on the top section and it has a bunch of openings on the bottom. It also helps protect the speaker from any rain/water that may leak down from the window, but lets face it moisture is moisture it doesn't has to fall straight down to get on the speaker. So cutting the rear section off isn't going to hurt anything.
You don't want a sealed encloser in your door either because it would never be big enough cubic space wise. If you've seen the Dynamat speaker baffles before, those are a bad thing for sound quality, except they stop most rattles. But to use them you really should cut a few small openings on the bottom so the speaker has air to move, otherwise it will place undue stress on the speaker.

I hope this is making sence... sometimesI explain things in such a way that make total sence to me but is totally useless to anyone else

The Type-X series speaker produce quite a bit of bass all by themselves. With those amped properly you could live without a sub... I couldn't but techincal you can
