Default What does adjusting Q do?

What does adjusting Q do?

my bass has 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0

my mids have 1.0 or 2.0

I can hear the changes when I change the settings, but i'm not quite sure what it actually does when I change the settings.

I would guess (from what little I looked at) that it adjusts EQ freq ranges as well as possibly adjusting time alignment-esque info...

But I could be way off...

The Q adjustment is the acuteness of the frequency you are amplifying. Most times it is on a sub-level adjustment. The lower the figure, the more focused the amplification is on the selected frequency. The higher it is, the more broadly the surrounding frequencies are also boosted.

Read the FAQ section... I know its in there, along with a LOT of other useful info.

Here is a quick snippet that I linked down to...

http://www.recordingwebsite.com/articles/eqprimer.php

I recommend setting your low-pass filter to 80htz, and set the Q down low. The higher the Q, the louder it will be, but it will "sound" less accurate.

Look up how to properly tune your amp in the FAQ section as well.

It's not like that on the Kenwood decks, John.

I mean, it is...but that's not the Q he's adjusting...

(That was going to be my original post, but then I looked a little further into it)

What Q setting is he adjusting?

I have a Kenwood DDX7015...

Ah! Now I see! Its a retarded EQ preset! I am not using that on mine. I have my bass/mid/treble gains/frequencies custom set to my ear... There is a "Q" setting on my HU, I believe, under the sub parameters... I will have to check it out when it gets back from the shop (getting Laskey engine installed).

not sure if we're talkinga buot the same thing? presets? like rock, smooth, jazz?

I'm not talking about those.

it is sub audio control, it's a sub setting under Bass, and Mid.

I think you have it right jwa. it does seem like it increase the range in which the bass + - adjustment affects the curve.

it would explain why it may sound like more muffled at 1.00 with Bass gain at +5

John is right. On a parametric equalizer, there are basically three controls for each EQ point. Center frequency, Q, and Gain. Center Frequency is the frequency around which the gain (or cut) is centered. Q is the bandwidth of frequencies affected around that center frequency.

yep.. that's why when I have it set to 2.00 it seems to have a "focused" adjustment rather than "boost" to the BASS range.
