HD radio is Digital Radio. If the reception is good enough, you will be listening to CD quality radio. No Static & Free. Most major socal stations are already broadcasting.

^Not 100% correct. Digital radio is a stronger broadcast, but you will NOT notice the quality changes. The only thing HD radio has is it transmits data, thus you will see the name of the song, station, artist, etc on your radio.

Its a complete waste of money.

The ability to see the station name, song, artist, etc. on the radio has been with us for years (5 or so?). That system has another name that escapes me.....
i think the term you are looking for is RDS (Radio Data System) and that has been around since the mid to late 80s...

"Digital" radio is not a new concept, it has been in the UK (and im assuming most of Europe) for a few years now, under the guise of DAB (digital audio broadcasting).

I found this snippet of info on the web...

The objective of converting to digital systems is to enable higher fidelity, greater noise immunity, and new services. However, because FM with good reception provides hi-fi sound, digital radio systems around the world rarely match FM's level of audio quality.

That's the one, and yes, RDS has been around a long time. I understand that the HD Radio concept here is to piggyback the digital info on the standard analog signal so that there is backward compatibility. I forgot that the UK has had all digital over the air radio available for a for a while. Do you know if its popular?

I moved away from the UK right as it started to be introduced so I cannot talk from personal experience, but it does seem to be a popular alternative - mainly because of the expanded services and channels that are offered over terrestrial radio.

I guess you could think of it as an comparable alternative to the "pay" satellite radio (xm/sirius) that we have here.

I thought HD radio was just regular radio with more pixels. HPH
