Default Wiring Courtesy Lights / Footwells

I'll be wiring LED Courtesy lights and LED footwell lights in a couple of days and I would like to have them turn on whenever the dome turns on so like when I unlock the car with the keyless remote it all lights up. I read the 8 page DIY on the footwell lights and I still don't quite understand the wiring. However, I came across this post and would like to know if it is correct

To make it simple, you'd need the lights and a relay.

The relay has 3 spots on it. One for power in, one for power out and one powered "switch" wire. (there might be a ground wire on there as well.)

You would mount up the lights as desired. Find what fused circuit you'd like power from (or run a fused line from the batt.) and wire them up as normal with the relay as the exception.

The relay works as a "switch". When power comes in to the trigger point, it closes the connection to the other two spots on the relay.

The trigger part would be hooked up to the hot side of the door switch. Modifry's instructions cover it.

Also, the relay will have a wiring diagram with it, that would help some too.

It's been a while since I wired up a relay, so I might have some of it a tad off, but that's the basics.

i have undercar and footwell lighting that lights up with the door unlock and door open.

here's some tips i gave some other member. might as well make it public.

RS# 275-226
is the part number for the 12v 30amp auto relay spst at radio shack.
relay has 4 connectors(male) you can buy female ones that just slide on it. at radioshack too
86 is the trigger
85 is always 12v..powers the relay i think
87 is what you want the 30/50 to be.
so it's like the 86 triggers 85 and 30/50 to bridge

there is a wire under the dash that turns negative(-) when the ceiling light turns on. basically this wire grounds the celing light so it turns on

the green/yellow wire. it's green with yellow stripe. and can be found on a harness under the dash and up. such a tight area. harness is approx behind the engine start button. so you have an idea where it is instead of a wild goose hunt. push button(tab) and yank down(wiggle) to disconnect.
found the pic. its the keyless module harness

here is another pic
this is under the dash i just took the power(12v+) from this letter 'D'

just so you know what the letters mean. E has 12v when you turn on your headlights, D has 12v at all times, C has power when the ignition is turned on(car is on). some ppl like to power their radar detector with C.

this diagram explains what to hook up to what

so basically you power whatever you want with the 12v constant and ground it with that wire to complete the circuit and power the footwell lighting or whatever. i always wondered if the relay was necessary but it's safe i guess.
and dont forget to mount the relay top side up(prongs facing down) or you'll wear it out prematurely.

Ok so let me repeat this so I fully understand it

85 you attach the constant +12V to
86 you attach to the dome light wire
87 you ground the relay to the chassis?
30/50 you attach the neon's ground to?

If you can catalogue your install with writing and photos, we could definetely use it and add it to the FAQ!

I'll be doing that with the foot wells as well as the courtesey lights but I just need to confirm the relay wiring before I go ripping out wires

correct.

basically the domelight has a 12v+ constant and when you open the door or unlock it grounds the green/yellow which complete circuit for the domelight and the light turns on.

what you said it right. you tap the neon footwell to a 12v+ constant. if you are doing only the footwell, i bet you can tap the neon ground to the green/yellow and be done with it. so the neon would turn on when the domelight is on from the door unlock or door ajar.

if you want to be safe use the relay. neon positive to 12v constant and neon ground to the 30/50 of the relay.

Thanks for the clarifaction and the help. I'll be wiring up some other things as well (little DIY job) so I think I'll use the relay just to be safe. Should be fun and I'll be doing a write up on everything when I'm finished.

Thanks again
