Default xmsr satellite radio question

Am I losing my mind, or is the search option missing from the forum?

At any rate just picked up a yellow 05 s2k today. Can someone tell me about the radio. The dealer seemed to think the head unit had to be changed to do xmsr, looking at the manual, I think all I need is the antenna accesory kit from Honda instsalled, is this correct?

Or can I go to an xmsr dealer and have an antenna installed and retain the factory head unit??
Got to know, as I'm dying without xm!

Rule #1: Never underestimate the potential level of stupidity or ignorance of someone who works at a dealer.

Rule #2: See Rule #1.

the honda xm system is too expensive, plus you keep the aweful factory head unit.

I would get an aftermarket head unit with an XMdirect unit or a Sirus unit. Also, the modifry DCI to keep dash controls.

for less $, you have a MUCH MUCH better system.

Lemme ask some of you guys, if I replace the head unit and go after market on the xmsr, using the modifry, anywhere else to mount the antenna? Looking at the factory install you have to drill a hole in the trunk, the thought of it makes me cringe!

The antenna on my 05 is in the same place it was on my 01 - stuck on top of the "secret compartment" behind the flip down windscreen. I NEVER put an antenna out on the outside of ANY car - they work well inside the car (on the dash or parcel shelf). Obviously, in a convertible there is NO REASON not to put it inside the car, since there is no metal overhead at all.

I use the SkyFi2 XM tuner so I can move it from car to car to bike to bike and only pay for a single subscription. With that you just need an aux in adapter for the OEM stereo - or (much better) a nicer, more powerful aftermarket stereo with aux in.

Dennis,
Any chance you could take a pic of the antenna mounted on the interior compartment. Especially if I could see the inside of the compartment to see how you've handled the wires??
Thanks

Well, I wouldn't say NO reason not to mount it inside... a metal plane to place the antenna on (which helps with reception in dodgy areas) is easier to find outside...

just attach it right beside the wind deflector behind one of the roll hoops. having an XM antenna is begging someone to break in IMO.
