Hate to break it to you, but a VAFC will not be effective for that level of modification. It's pretty much effective for a car with moderate bolt ons - changing vtec point and WOT correction. 200 is the going rate to tune a vafc on a dyno.

since you have a 2001, your only choice is to completely replace the stock ECU with EMS, haltech, or a KPro. itll cost 4 digits after tuning for any of those.

Well thanks! I know that down the road I will need like k pro or haltech but I was just looking for something to tune a little until I have that. But I probably just need to go ahead and buy the good stuff! Haha

I don't know anything about tuning for cams, but if you just have some bolt-ons like I/H/E then the Apexi VAFC's are good for lowering VTEC and leaning out the super rich top end on your early AP1. It will net you a bit of top-end HP and a decent amount of mid-range HP from the lowered VTEC. It will also help to smooth out your power band and make the power more useable.

You can't expect a ton, but it is certainly worth it IMO for the price if you just have basic bolt-ons.

My recommendation would be the unit I have, which is the Apexi Neo. It is the newest VAFC unit that Apexi offers, so it has the best tuning resolution. But, from what I hear, they all work pretty much the same way. If a VAFC2 came up for sale real cheap, I would have probably gotten that instead. Just found a good deal and moved on it.

And if you aren't good at wiring/soldering, then definitely invest in the plug-and-play harness... either the one from Apexi or the Boomslang.

I was always told that our ECU will eventually tune out any changes made by the VAFC (minus VTEC engagement point). Can someone set me straight?

it wont since the vafc takes signal in from the motor, changes it, then sends it to the ecu

the ecu will always get a different signal

I used it in conjunction with my vortech setup without issue to pick up a little more mid range and lean it out a little bit more.

The WOT stuff will not get "re-learned" out. It may or may not be true that if you attempt to tune for partial-throttle that the ECU may "re-learn" and effectively zero out this partial-throttle tuning. I don't know first-hand as I only tune my Neo for WOT.

I am also using my Neo now with my "stage-1" Comptech supercharger kit to lower VTEC and keep any rich spots in check at the top end. From the day I first tuned it after my SC install until now, my AF curve has been very consistent through all RPMs, including those in which the Neo is manipulating the AF signal.

Thanks for the responses. Didn't mean to hi-jack. Have been curious about the Neo myself for some time, but haven't pulled the trigger. Thanks OP for the thread!
