AEM EMS Beginers Guide for DIY Tuners
Hi Guys....
Don't want to Make the Thread name Misleading or anything but After Numerous Searching Trough the threads i didn't find the Stuff and Info i needed and i am starting this thread in hope to become a Source for Many Questions Members have and some Hands-on Knowledge people have had with the AEM EMS and Tuning Techniques and what to look For when tuning and what Parameters are most important.
It has been Many Years since the AEM EMS came out for the S2000 and i think many of the Starting issues have been Ironed and have been solved from Experience.
First off i would rather not like to see Replies like --- Get it tuned by a Professional tuner and try not to save money----
This Thread is not about that...
This Thread is what the Name Implies. What i basically want to achieve is to have a Kind of tutorial on what to do and How To setup the EMS for use and Tuning and Knowledge people that are not shy to share their Knowledge with Other people like me on how to install and Tune the AEM EMS.
that means that i know many people Went trough the same that i am going trough and i want this tread to be dedicated to people that want to learn and want to Mess with tuning on their own risk.
Some conditions Apply in order for this tread to have any sense.
1. People will find This thread Useful if they have no access to tuner Shop or tuner Services.(maybe there is no tuner available at all-like in my country)
2. People that want to learn how to install the AEM EMS for the first time, starting issues Initial Setup and working all the bugs out and tuning it.
I hope this thread will have the Following.
1. What books to buy/loan and learn from- Getting the Basic Knowledge on how EMS work and what all the components mean and how all it works Together
-This basically Includes people that Are total Novice at these things and people with Partial Knowledge and Experience... My book recommendation is the How to tune and Modify Engine management systems by Jeff Hartman. Attending EFI 101 Classes are best But since Many people don't have access to that also - than this tread has to DO (for those like me)
2. On What to pay special attention in the AEM EMS manual and what Functions are imperative to know.I know that the AEM EMS manual is for All EMS owners and not just for the S2000 1012 and 1052.So not all Functions that the EMS has are used in our Car.
3. I hope to have people that are Especially Knowledgeable To prepare a kind of Step by Step Tutorial on how to install for the first time the EMS and Later on How to use Its Functions in DIY tuning.
4. Its Expected people that Want to contribute and learn from this tread that Already Have or are in the process of getting the EMS otherwise it wont make any sense.
5. Its Expected to have a Start Up-basic EMS map for the Application that is in question be worked and fine tuned to your Specific Needs. (sc with 5.5 psi pulley or 10 psi..full exhaust or Stock 10psi inline Turbo Ect,ect..)Also to have All the Needed things to Do the tune(bigger injectors Ect,ect)
6. People can Donate EMS maps for specific setups they Have to serve as Start up point for other people with the Exact or near the same setup(Just Say PM for the MAP)
here is a Interesting Tread on Basic Setup lines https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...0&#entry7075811
I would Edit the First post or even delete it to Accommodate Tutorials that may be prepared form people like Scorpion,Shawn church,2NRWRNCH...and others that know First hand the EMS and all other Novice people that went from a Novice tuner to a self-capable tuner(people that went from the position that i am in now -novice- and became what i want to become).
I hope this thread to be source and connection to all the other compliment threads for pulley sizes and Belts and other FI Stuff.
I hope that this Thread Comes to life and isn't Ignored and gets Buried and the Archive and only comes up Upon search and doesn't provide what it intended to.I hope it becomes a Sticky on the FI or Electronics forums.
I hope that This Thread becomes what it intends to be...Learning Experience and Place to Turn to when you have problems and post questions and get suggestions on what to do and serve as this Board serves to all us S2000 owners,a source of Needed information and Place where you share your experiences...
So To Sum Up what this Thread Its supposed to have:
-a Initial setup info on EMS and Different Tuning Techniques like MBT, Tuning By EGT,Knock based Timing Advancing and other things... Pros and cons
-How to add Fuel to your map,How far should you Advance the timing, how to setup Boost map or not to, Automaping Settings,WB feedback Ect,ect-
In the end all that you learn here - its All done on your own Risk-

Read the AEM EFI bacis pdf, it's loaded with great information. Read it until you know it by heart and you'll know almost everything they teach in EFI101. Then read the manual a few times. This is how I started tuning. Remember, it's very hard to break and engine in vacuum state so start there. Detination plays less of a part because engine speed and cyclider pressure are not as high as say 8000rpm at 16psi of boost
My advice is to just go and play and then ask questions when you need help. You can read all day long until you have it all memorized, but you'll still lack the confidance to touch the box. Just play around with it and save maps often so if you mess something up and the cars doesn't start or doesn't run right you can go back.

I wrote up some articles on honda-tech awhile back in 2004. most people got some good info from them.
