Ap1 Vortech Supercharger
Hi All,
I'm thinking about installing a supercharger on my 2000 S2K. I have read and read and read many post regarding this topic, but most seem to be from many years ago, how about an update 2015 is right around the corner..
So my main concern is SMOG, given that I live in Orange County CA. I don't like the idea of installing an EMS, such as AEM EMS, because I don't want to go through the headache when smog comes around. Do I need to have an EMS when my Vortech Supercharger is installed? The only way I would have an EMS is if I can swap it out with the stock ECU when smog comes around, or is there something else I can do when smog is needed? I understand that an EMS is important for tuning, but is there one that can save my butt during smog or swapping the EMS with the stock ECU?
I was going to go all NA bolts ons: intake, header, exhaust, etc, but that would not have given me much HP.
I'm not trying to be all track racer, but I do want some good increase in HP as my s2k is a daily driver, so I felt that a super charger would do the job. I'd be happy with the standard 6.5 psi if that is going to keep me smog legal, like I mentioned earlier I just want to have an increase and at the same time be smog legal. I know Vortech is Smog legal in Cali, also Greddy and there is one other supercharger that is smog legal I just can't remeber the name.
Lastly, are there other additions or modifications to the engine when inStalling a supercharger?
Please advice and lead me in the right direction. Being in Cali and wantng to upgrade to a supercharger is very frustrating and at times hopeless simPly because of smog.
I don't think I'm the only one going through this dilemma of smog and supercharger, So if there is anyone out there in the S2k community that can give me and others like me advise, words of wisdom, and knowledge I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You All,

Thank You All,
Vortech comptech and greddy are smog legal.
Aem is nottttt smog legal u will need hondata flash pro.
Look for a used kit with an after cooler and all the Original parts (So u can get smoged) and ur good to go. Might need a clutch at some point too..... And a tune for the flash pro.
And whallla ur at 300whp and smog legal

The other SC kit that's smog legal is Comptech I'm assuming you're talking about. And if you just swap it on you can pass smog without touching anything else. Stock ecu, stock/smog legal everything with the SC, you will be fine. You can not pass smog with the ems. You need you stock ecu.

Do I need to have an EMS when my Vortech Supercharger is installed? No
Lastly, are there other additions or modifications to the engine when. InStalling a supercharger on a 2000 S2k (88,000 miles)? No
Essentially, the 6-psi full-system kit is smog legal and Vortech has a EO # for it.
Note, there are a ton of threads on the Vortech kit. I recommend doing some research and educating yourself. Some of the posts may be a few years old; however the data is still valid. There hasn't been any new revelations on the Vortech unit.

Thanks for commenting Volcomboy,
-If you don’t mind me asking you, in respect to Hondata flash pro, would that be something that needs to be swapped out for smog purposes and have the stock ECU swapped back in? If swapping needs to be done, would the Hondata need to be reprogrammed after swapping it back in?
-If you can help me understand, the after cooler does or does not come with the Vortech Supercharger? Does that need to be purchased secretly? And how does the after cooler assist with smog?
I apologize for all these questions Volcomboy, I'm just knowledge in this field.
Thank You Again,

In respect to the EMS, would I be able to install Hondata Flash Pro for tuning purposes and just swap it back out with the stock ECU when smog comes around? If so, would I need to reprogram the Hondata after smog is completed?
Lastly, do I need to have an EMS in order to fine tune the Vortech Supercharger? Would stock ECU be good enough in respect to tuning purposes?
I apologize for all these questions, but thank you for taking the time in assisting me.

Again, you dont need a standalone ECU for 6psi of boost for the Vortech kit.
Edit: Go to the Vortech site to determine what comes with the Kit. Below link shows the aftercooler included.

Also read EO D-213-27. You need to stay within these bounds/parts to keep the system smog legal.

Kpro might not work in Cali due to the ecu coming up as a RSX? I could be wrong. Otherwise Kpro might be the only option for passing emissions.
Vortech has the capacity to run off stock ECU and injectors (it adds a map clamp bypass, timing modifier device, rising fuel pressure regulator). But first, not a good idea to modify your car with power adders as the timing and fuel enrichment is pushing the limits of the stock ecu/injectors.
