Bad day any ideas?
like i said just check the oil clearances with a used mismatched cap (plastigauge). if that doesn't work i would just buy a used head, i sold a complete head for 450 shipped. so you should be able to find one for a decent price if the first way doesn't work out.

Why would you buy an entire head whey you can buy the rocker and cap assembly only, which is a straight bolt on?

The caps are bolted to the head then bored, they are a matched part since they are machined together and are not technically interchangeable. This is the case on almost every over head cam motor out there. That being said I have had a cap off a spare head in my motor for a long time because of the same issue you had. I have checked the cam and there is no abnormal wear, of course I may have just gotten lucky. If you can't get a cap from someone local I could send you one. Obviously I can't recommend you do this but whats it going to do damage the head? Just make sure the cam spins freely, maybe check it with some plastigauge or something.

You can't buy cam caps/towers new without buying a entire head. You can find them used, only if the seller wants to separate.

They break from not tightening the caps down evenly/slowly when installing the cams.
