Default Big Spool sound diffrence GT30R vs. GT35R

OK,

So I had a GT30/71R mini-me lovefab set-up, and it was the first time I heard a turbo sound the way it did. It didn't have that high pitched whistle I usually hear in a turbo car, but really I just heard it SUCKING AIR. Maybe sometimes you could hear it a little, but not really. Most I ever ran on it was 10 psi of boost, but I ran low boost like that on my other cars , and the turbo whine was very pronounced and loud, but I was running diffrent turbo's on those cars.

SO>......

Who has owned or heard both? Does the GT35R sound a lot different? Anyone have a sound clip or video of there car with a GT35R?

Or post a vid or sound clip of another turbo that has a very pronounced whine and list the turbo.

J. R.

PS. Yes this is a lame topic, but I am currious as wo why some turbo's make the whine and others don't.

The GT30R (GT3076R) has a somewhat High Pitched whistle, where as the GT35R has what you described as "Sucking Air".

Edit:

REALLY. I heard its the opposite. The 35R whistles, and the 30R just sucks air.

It depends on a lot of factors. The sound pitch of the turbo is mostly related to the rotational speed. Higher speed, higher pitch. I don't think we can just classify GT30s and GT35s and say one will sound different than the other. You have to account for not only the turbine side (the 30/35 part) but the compressor side as well. I believe difference in the compressor size, trim, housings will have a big impact on sound. A larger compressor doesn't need to spin as quickly to move the same amount of air as a smaller compressor.

Look at a centrifugal supercharger. It's just a large compressor wheel that only spins to 45,000-50,000 RPM. Typically, turbo compressors spin to 90,000-120,000 RPM.

There are so many noises going on when I'm in full throttle, I don't think I can really hear my turbo spinning at all. When I slowly roll into and out of throttle, I can certainly hear the turbo spool up, but once it gets to a certain speed, it just sounds like a jet engine...

Here's a video of mine. At the beginning I rolled into boost lightly a few times but I think the whooshing sounds are mostly gas escaping the BOV since there I wasn't in WOT. You are hear the turbo "respool" after each shift, but it spools so fast, it all just sounds like air.

It doesn't help that we use external wastegates which muffles out ~75% of the turbo noise.

heard both. the reason why gt30s are louder is because of the anti-surge housing design. GT35r we see usually has design similar to hks turbos. you can get the anti-surge housing like gt30 for gt35r from garrett.

What housing A/R did you have, and what boost level?

I've only heard a GT3076R .63A/R and one was on a D16 and one was on an EJ20. Both had the somewhat loud whistle.

Here is another video (This is the Civic I was talking about):
