Driving into work today my CEL came on. On the way home I went to auto zone to have the codes pulled. They are :
P0170 (fuel trim malfunction bank 1)
P0172 (system too rich bank 1).
I just had my car on the dyno last week and had the fpr adjusted as I was running very lean. Are these codes something to worry about? Thanks in advance.
What does the a/f trace look like? Sounds like they tweaked it up too high.
How did they adjust the fuel pressure? Vortech doesn't have an adjustable FPR without taking it apart.
It was taken apart to make the adjustment. I believe they used shims or just stretched the spring inside the regulator. I will post 2 dyno runs to show where the A/F started and where it ended up.
Doesn't look too rich to me. You should let the tuner shop know it threw those codes. Do you have any other piggy back type ECUs at work? Check the wiring on the black boxes.
sstone, I hope u are on race gas or not boosting...those AF seem a bit high for the streets..both codes are rather common though. Try using a 18mm spark plug anti fouler as a mechanical O2 simulator...
I have no other management device other then the fpr that comes with the Vortech kit. The car is my daily driven summer car and is running 7 lbs. of boost.
So the ECU thinks the car is running rich, but it is still running to lean? I am not sure from the responses which side of the equation my car is on. Is my cars A/F in a dangerous area?
A mechanical 02 simulator on the primary 02 sensor is a Very bad idea. Only use a mechanical 02 sim or spark plug anti-fouler on the secondary 02 sensor that was in the convertor when using a test pipe.
The P0171 is being set because the Short and Long term fuel trims show the PCM having to add more fuel to keep hit the desired AF ratios at part throttle and idle. WOT fuel trim isn't monitored when the DTC is set.
Possibilities are:
MAP sensor clamp wiring is crappy causing to great of a Voltage difference between the MAP and BARO sensor.
A faulty primary 02 sensor, either biased high or low output.
Bad injector or injectors not flowing enough fuel.
You need someone with a OBDII scann tool that can read a live data stream to fix it. Most dealers will send you far far away now that you have installed a SC.
Thanks for all the help. My friend is a tech at honda so hopefuly he can help me out in the near future. Until then, do you all think the car is safe to drive?
