A SC sounds different because usually, they simple don't produce enough PSI to create the typical "turbo blow off valve" sound. Let one of the 14psi SC guys stick a tial bov on their pipes and I bet you it will sound exactly the same

is there any blow off valve FAQ pages for superchargers on the site? I'd like to read up some more on installation and how they operate and what not. a quick BOV FAQ query turns up a only 6 results.

They are used to release the pressure in the intake pipes when the throttle is closed so you don't either bend your throttle body (very high pressure applications) or force air through the compressor in the wrong direction. How they work is very simple when you think about how they are designed.
You have a spring with a vacuum / boost source on one side of it and moving air on the opposite side. At idle, the car is in total vacuum and the compressor (whether it be a SC or a turbo compressor) is creating positive pressure relative to the engine. In this case, the vacuum in the line running to the bov pulls it open and allows the positive pressure of air to exit (or if its a small compressor, it allows the engine to suck air through the bov bypass the compressor creating less throttle lag.)
The same happens under normal driving really.
Under WOT / positive boost pressure load, the positive pressure in the vacuum lines coupled with the fast moving air in the intake pipe forces the bov closed. When you let off the throttle, there is an immediate vacuum which forces the bov open.
Just think about it, its fairly simple.

ok so next question, and i prolly expect some flaming, but what does a esm do? i finally found out it was an acronym (LOL) for electronic signal modifier.

IMO this is a much better question than asking about BOVs
